Because the comics have pulled off a lot of shit to the point where people are disenchanted with considering about reading it.
Besides, the real question if how many of /mlp/ buys the comics under the {if I like the book, I'll buy it} mentality shared by /co/ and some of /v/. I still follow it, but in recent, I haven't bought since the last FF Rarity issue

I watch the each episode in high quality ONCE, then delete it from my hard drive. If I want to watch it again, I buy it. I think I've bought ~35 episodes on itunes.
