It was actually Shining Armor that ruined the show. Twilight never mentioned Cadence, and she never had a reason to. Her brother though, why would that not be something she'd have ever mentioned to her friends. She could have been telling tales all about him to her friends when they started talking about this and that, especially when Applejack would talk about Big Mac or Pinkie would talk about her life on the rock farm. Or, you know, whenever any of them mentioned their younger siblings.
Shining Armor is an afterthought and never should have been in the show.

Having a brother is far less devastating than completely destroying Faust's vision and the mystique inherent in having only two alicorns.
