This might not apply to you OP since your mac sounds old af, but for me i just create a new disk image and password protect it. Put the image in a non conspicuous place/directory.Don't ever get a mac, people.

Hit enter.
Paste "mkdir .horsepussy"
Hit enter.
Now to access the file,
Paste "cd /Users/USER/Desktop"
Hit enter
Paste "Open .horsepussy"
Hit enter.
The file should be invisible unless you open it from the terminal.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
