Meanwhile, at the Hagwarders Guild.
Resting her chin on a hoof, the long necked mare looked down at the board intensely. Her next choice would make or break the game for her. It would only take a small slip up for her to have lost it all. She thought of every square, every move, every possibility and put all that knowledge into good use.
"Good move, Patchpleat." she said to herself before lifting and turning the board around to look at it from the other side. "But I'm afraid not good enough." She swiped the white queen from the board, placing at the end of the growing line on the right side of the board. Taking note of the comparatively much smaller line of black pieces to the left side of the board.
"Patchpleat!" the silence of the moment was broken by the faint cry of a familiar voice in the distance. A friend of hers, Wetweave, who had just returned from an assignment. She was no doubt anxious to talk. "Patchpleat?" she asked, to no one in particular, her voice growing louder as she drew closer.
"Garden, door to your left." Patchpleat responded, not long before the door to her own left swung open as the cheery mare skipped through, dropping her mace and whiteboard on her way in. She didn't say much else, just stopped at the side of the chess board and watched trying to guess what her friends next move would be.
"Who's winning?" she asked quizzically, despite that it'd be very obvious if she just bothered to count the number of pieces on the board. It was safe to say that Wetweave was not exactly well versed in chess, or any game of strategy for that matter. She'd never been patient enough for it, a characteristic that shone throughout all her young life. But Patchpleat remembers many others like her who were the same, who had gone on to become great Hagwarders in their own right. It just took time like all things.

"Black, I always practice to let black win. It's all about learning to come back from a disadvantage, since white starts first." she made another move, drawing closer to checkmate. Wetweave ducked as Patchpleat lifted the board another time. Some darting back and forth from either side of the board, and Wetweave still couldn't predict her friends moves.
"I don't know about that, I mean I'm not great at chess," she began, met with a single raised eyebrow from Patchpleat as she glared at her. "But if you go second, you can just copy the first person right? You've got to be able to make some progress with that."
Patchpleat wasn't really too sure how to respond to such an insolent question. She would make sure that her young friend's naivety would not go unchecked. "And how many times have you actually won a chess match?"
"Not once." a quick, but firm response. At least she wasn't going to pretend that her strategy had gotten her any further than a few moves.
"You need to learn to play chess. Properly. The sport of kings" Patchpleat insisted, much to the dismay of her friend.
"Yeah, maybe not right now. Witch might have another job for me." she responded, grimacing at the idea of having to sit here any longer and talk to Patchpleat about the joys of playing chess. This was usually the part of the conversation where she just hoped that there was another hag somewhere in the world she could go and kill.
"Witchwean has been silent since you left." The news put all and any plans of her swift escape to rest. "Come, take a seat." Patchpleat gestured to the empty chair opposite her as she placed all the pieces back in their correct position on the board.
"You'll just beat me." Weteave protested.
Patchpleat smiled "And you'll learn from the loss."
"That's really not fair." she said, defeated, as she sat in the chair and crossing her forelegs.

Patchpleat turned the board once more, without letting a single piece shake from it's place. Wetweave looked down at her row of black chess pieces. Perfect, just what she had wanted. She could prove to Patchpleat that she could get far by copying her friend. And then after that? Well, she'd most likely wing it.
"Okay then." she smiled. Patchpleat was quick to make her first move, the pawn in front of her king. Wetweave did the same, almost just as fast.
"You know, you won't get very far by copying me." she said, immediately beginning to see what Wetweave had planned. Why was she not surprised.
"I won't do any worse than I normal." she moved her kingside bishop. And Wetweave did the same.
"Let's see about that." she said, smug, as she grinned at Patchpleat. Patchpleat wanted to laugh. She had planned to go easy on her friend, but it looked like she had to teach her a very quick lesson. She moved her queen between the gap and her friend did the same. Fatal mistake.
"How can I lose if I just-"
"Checkmate." Patchpleat said triumphantly, replacing her friends pawn with her own queen; leaving the black king with no where to move.
"But, no it's not because I can-" she went to reach for her own king, before being stopped by Patchpleat shaking her head.
"No, you can't move your king to take the queen. That's it, checkmate." She said, moving the seven pieces back into their original places so she could start another game with herself.
"But that's not fair!" Wetweave complained as she stood up away from her chair and headed back to the door for her belongings.
"That's what you get for copying me without understanding how to play the game." Patchpleat looked over at her friend, sulking by the door. An idea came to her mind, perhaps she might even teach her friend a lesson. "Why don't we play a different game. I call it Hags verses Hagwarders."
I have to go eat. Its been 7 hours and im bloody starving. Ill be back later to do more.

"That sounds right up my alley!" she dropped her things back on the ground, rushing back over to her friend who just chuckled at her enthusiasm.
"It's still technically chess," Patchpleat continued, the smile on Wetweaves face; gone. "But a little different. I'll help you along the way."
A bit unsure, but interested none the less, Wetweave sat back down on the empty chair. "Fine, what's different about it."
"Just give me time to prepare." Patchpleat said and after a minute or so of setting up, Wetweave took a look at the board in front of her not really sure what the older Hagwarder had planned. On Patchpleat's side were two rows of pawns, all 16 of them in the game, and on the opposite side a single row of the remaining black pieces. Wetweave was obviously at an advantage, but she couldn't begin to understand why.
"For a moment, let's pretend that these pieces aren't kings, queens, knights etcetera but hags on my side and Hagwarders on your side." Wetweave understood so far, that much she could gather from the name of the game. "The rules of the game are simple. The moves are the same as chess and we can both capture each others pieces like normal. If you capture all of my pieces, you win. But if I get a single hag to your side and collect the queen, I've won."
"A single hag?" Wetwave asked, looking over at the two rows of pawns like they were easy pickings.
Patchpleat nodded "That's all it takes."
"But all of these are Hagwarders?" continued her questions, gesturing to her own side of the board.
Patchpleat sighed, not expecting it to take this long for her friend to understand the concept of the game. "For the purpose of a demonstration, yes."
"But your hags are just pawns!"
"Is there a problem?" Patchpleat asked. She could tell that Wetweave wasn't done with her questions, but it looks like she was satisfied for now.
"White still goes first, and since I have the only white pieces on the board I'll begin."

While they do relax and have fun activities in the guild, Brittlebee is always actively trying to inject parts of human culture into the guild that Hagwarders don't follow, like birthdays. Keep in mind that the ranks aren't a traditional hierarchy of power. They all suit different roles and all have drawbacks. IV III and II can be considered a progression of training and ability, but Rank I and S are unobtainable by training.
In a way, I and S are 'better' because they have unique traits, but II's are the majority of the hagwarder force because they are the 'default' Hagwarder and still incredibly powerful(Though there can still be a huge different in ability between two Rank II hagwarders.)
I've been careful to keep that in mind. I don't want what happened in DBZ where everyone is useless except the main characters because of their power-ups.

Patchpleat made her first quick move pushing the pawn third from her right of the board two places forward, not that she had much of a choice at the moment. Obviously, the hag side of the board was always going to be limited in it's moves what with only having pawns that could only make moves one step forward and had a very short range to take another piece. They were mindless, like the hags they represented, and only had one goal in mind; keep going forward and take out as many hagwarders on the way there. Wetweave didn't spend much time thinking either, moving the queenside knight to it's left. It was only on that first move when she had realise that since she and her friend didn't have the same pieces anymore there was no way she would be able to copy this game. Not a problem now, but perhaps one later when she would be faced with a tougher scenario.
"It's a slow start, I will admit." Patchpleat said, moving the pawn two spaces from the left of her side of the board, "But eventually you'll be surrounded and have to make a tough decision on how to continue." Whilst Wetweave couldn't copy someone else, she could copy herself on the other side the board. So, without giving much time to think, she moved the kingside knight to it's left; mirroring her first move.
"Interesting. Why did you do that Wetweave?" Patchpleat asked curiously. Wetweave stopped for a moment, trying her best to think of a reason that made more sense and would please Pacthpleat.
"If I put the knight on that side too, I'm covering more of the board. Each side is evenly protected." Wetweave spoke with some uncertanty, hoping that her answer was good enough.
"Would you not rather protect the knight that you've already sent out onto the board?" her friend responded, pointing to the knight she'd moved in her first move. Again, Wetweave paused for a moment. It was simple, when she thought about it, that she had probably unintentionally made the best choice.

Maybe, she thought to herself, she should pay more attention to what she's doing and why from here on out. Just encase she's asked why she made her move again. Over the next few moves, she'd taken more time into her thoughts. She began to plan what she might do in the next turn too though she was no better at predicting Patchpleats moves than before. If anything, her moves became even more unpredictable since she had nothing to gain or lose depending on which she moved. All of her pieces were evenly matched and still marching their way slowly across the board.
A few turns more, and Wetweave was faced with her first challenge. A pawn right in line with one of her knights, perfect to take. It'd be the first piece of the game. But, she was certain to lose the knight too. One pawn didn't seem worth it to lose one of her knights. And it dawned on her, in that very moment, that there wasn't much she could do. Patchpleat could just keep moving her pawns in a row and for every piece that Wetweave took Patchpleat would take a piece in return.
"I do I'm going to lose all my pieces before you reach the end." she said, struggling what to do. She could always just move another piece, but then the longer she waited the more time she left that knight vulnerable to being taken by one of the pieces further along the board. Patchpleat nodded.
"For now, your knight has strayed too far out. You can always bring her back in, closer to the start, but then you'd be delaying the inevitable and eventually you'd have to take the hags in a group." Patchpleat made the move for her, continuing to move the pawn that had originally been a target for the knight closer.
"Then I'll lose."
Patchpleat's eyes widened at this response. It looks as if her lesson wasn't in vain."Yes."
"I'd always lose, and the hags would always win."
