Why were base jabbers being used the way they were in Zeta in 0096?

How do those flying platforms work? How are the controlled?

Weren't the ones in the OYW just heavy bombers that Zakus and Goufs hopped on top of for a ride, so they had their standard aircraft pilots?

Because you make threads for questions instead of discussions. 4chan isn't Yahoo Answers, make a QTDDTOT Thread or ask in a relevan thread. And then kill yourself because on top of everything your questions are retarded and you're a negative influence on this board.

Probably because lazy animators and them having like 8 episodes be "dudes fly across the ocean in a big jet while constantly lambasted by robots on flying skateboards"

Are you unfamiliar with snapshit's manner of generally going around saying stuff that's really, really stupid?

By a pilot.

Those were Dodais. Different.

Because self-sustained flight at that point was still extremely, stupendously expensive. We don't see an equivalent until UC 0105 with the Penelope and Xi that have self-sustained flight and they're both also extremely huge and expensive MS.

Cheaper and Easier to just give MS that need to fly a Base Jabber at a fraction of the cost.

I just don't understand why UC has these self-contained flying platforms for mobile suits. Why not just use these things en masse?

It must not have been that espensive, if they can afford to throw around MS sized flying platforms that can support the weight of an entire MS on their backs.

Because then it would be macross. Or maybe top gun.

It is kind of funny to watch, with MS being used as nothing more than turrets

Base Jabbers have far less moving parts, aren't nearly as well armored, can be controlled by either the MS pilot him/herself or an onboard operator, and either do not employ a minovsky ultracompact fusion reactor or use a particularly less powerful, less expensive one (probably the latter, since they DO use a mega particle cannon.)

Not to mention they are far more fuel efficient and can easily carry two MS at a time.

>with MS being used as nothing more than turrets
With guided weapons being as useless as they are, having a high-functioning, well armored turret that packs the power of a battleship's main cannon (sometimes even more) is a pretty big battle asset in UC.

Not to mention they can detach from the Flying platform if they need to, or if it is destroyed, so even if you lose the base jabber, you have plenty of fuel left for hovering or mitigated free-fall if need be, so getting hit doesn't necessarily mean you're out of the fight.

>Why not just use these things en masse?

Because they're ferryboats, not fighter jets. In a fight, they'd go over about as well as the Public-class assault ships of the OYW. The Base Jabber's job is to get MS closer to the battleground with a full fuel tank and then get the hell out of Dodge.

Anti-gravity drives aren't developed until what, deep into UC100+?

Plus UC96 is still before the movement to make mobile suits smaller and more efficient. Mobile suits of it's time and big heavy fuckers in general, it makes sense to transport them around in a such a cheap and simple manner.

Minovsky Drives existed since before UC 0079. It's just that they were too huge to use on MS.
Some MS did have atomospheric flight, in the form of attached rocket boosters, or a waverider form. But transformations were expensive and e attached boosters were usually huge as fuck.

MS sized Minovsky Drives didn't appear until UC 0105, with the XI an Penelope, but they were both giant ass suits, standing at around 30 Meters Tall and bulky as all fuck.
Miniaturized Minosky drives appeared in UC 0136 on the F-99 Record Breaker, but the three prototypes were all destroyed and appearantly SNRI doesn't keep backups of the shit they're making and the technology was lost until UC 0153 with the Victory and V2 Gundams.

>It must not have been that espensive, if they can afford to throw around MS sized flying platforms that can support the weight of an entire MS on their backs.

There's a key difference here between mobile suits and subflight systems: One is fucking made to fly in an atmosphere and has some methods to create lift and the other doesn't. Base Jabbers and Dodais both have wings and fins, and those alongside their high thrust output make them capable of flying and transporting mobile suits.

In Gundam there are only 4 ways for a mobile suit to fly unassisted: Having enough thrust out the ass, being a transformable mobile suit that transforms in a way that orients the majority of the MS's thrusters to the aft of the craft and sometimes allows for more aerodynamic lifting surfaces to be used (like the Zeta's backpack turning into the wings), having a way to generate a Minovsky Craft l-field cushon, and a Minovsky Drive, like the V2 uses.

Also, beam rotors.
>>
>>14496352
That sorta fits in with the Minovsky Craft system, since I don't know how else spinning what is essentially a beam saber generates enough lift to allow a mobile suit to hover.
