The Guncannon isn't really subpar, it has high power cannons AND a beam rifle while being even more heavily armored than the Gundam in Lunar Titanium.
Not something you want to fight Char in but against regular Zaku II's you can still beat them to death even with your bare heavily armoured hands.
I'd understand saying sub-par if you were talking about the Guntank, which is heavily specialized towards one very specific role and that is not close-medium range firefights.
He has the best character arc in the original series, and has one of the most intriguing post-war life of the characters we've seen followed up on in animated material.

I liked him quite a bit, his "I'm in it for me" attitude and focus and self preservation made him a believable character in the original show. His attitude changes throughout the series, but I best remember him as the pilot with some great bantz.
Also his English voice actor voices Inuyasha too, which I didn't realize till a few years after I watched the original Gundam.

Maybe Kai's real name is "George" and he calls himself "Kai Shiden" based on the japanese plane's nickname, just like how Raiden's real name is Jack and he got his codename from the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden.

Dude Guncanons are pretty good MS and is pretty capable in handling any MS Zeon had at the time of it's deployment.

I actually really liked Kai. At first I was just fond of his old-school character design, Granted everyones character design was fairly unique but Kais just stood out a bit more, though I was pretty certain he'd turncoat at some point or another, he looked too shifty not to.
But then he didn't. He was an asshole, but an asshole that had your back. I started off liking him but fully expected that to change down the line, to my surprise the opposite happened. I was really happy to see him show up again in Zeta. He ended up being one of the most believable and real characters I'd seen in an anime, and I'd actually say he might be my favorite character in the franchise.

Well frankly I'm on episode 32 of 0079 and 14 of Zeta.
I stepped away 2 years ago from /m/ and decided to focus my attention on Japanese and other Asian fantasy movies.
I'm one of those oldfags that watched these series as a kid on toonami.
I got so caught up in college life that I just focused on school, friends, a gf, and in general collecting otaku movie memrobelia of ninjas and things that my anime life was simply watching "toonami" aka just a re-amped version of adult swim anime and retro tokusatsu shows.

It was equipped to fight a conventional war with tanks, airport, mechanized infantry, arty. It probably couldn't fire it's cannon accurately unless it was standing still. Even in 0083, torso and shoulder mounted weapons systems are downright unusable at anything more than walking pace.
It's mobility was limited. It focused more on up and down, rather than the XYZ axis focus of the zaku. The zaku was designed to shoot on the move, and engage mobile suits. They essentially skipped a generation of weapons by designing the main battle tank concept for mobile suits.

Yeah, it's like pitting fighter planes against attack planes. Sure the attack planes have heavier firepower, but the fighters are nimbler and will always end up in a more advantageous position to shoot down enemies
also I'm betting a bunch of those 12 guncannons are gonna die for the usual silly melodramatic battle reasons like being completely oblivious as they fly into battle and straight into some bazooka shells, panicking when the zakus get up close for some melee combat, and getting shot up by superior teamwork

Its twelve rookies in relatively untested machines, not equipped right for the sortie.
