Should I give this a shot? I want to get into the new Gundam Unicorn because I liked what I saw but I feel like I need to know more about the UC before so I decided to watch the original gundam(79, Zeta and so on). But after watching the opening of 0079 my hype is dead
I'm going to be honest, it looks like a kiddy cartoon.
Is it a good anime? Or is it something that was good at the time but doesn't hold up to today standards?

/m/, since this thread seems pretty done can someone tell me why Prince of Darkness is hated so much? I always see it brought up with GGG final, but I just finished nadesico and was thinking about watching it? It looks like a kids cartoon because that is what it was. There is no point denying it. You have to compare though to all the other "kids mecha" cartoons of the 1970s to see how Gundam 0079 was an improvement on the genre. How big that improvement was I leave it up to you.
Does it hold up to today's standard ? Nope, but then you'll have a hard time finding a japanese anime from the 1970s that stands the test of time.
Is it worth watching ? Yes and no. The tv series no, unless you're a hard-core vintage mecha otaku or an anime completist. The film trilogy capture 99% of the story, and is a definite improvement over the tv series. Watch that instead.
If you want a modern retelling of Gundam 0079 you have only one option. It doesn't exist in full animated form so you'll have to read the manga Gundam The Origin.

Unicorn is called a "sidestory" for a reason. It exists only as a minor footnote in the UC timeline and doesn't at all begin cover the events of the main series(s). While there is some surface-level enjoyment to be had watching it new, you won't have any of the context with which to make sense of the events in the wider scheme of things.
If you're really that lazy, then I recommend you at least watch the 0079 Movie Trilogy and Char's Counterattack (also a movie) before diving into Unicorn.

I just marathoned it to get into mecha anime since I was never exposed to them for the most part. The age shows in its animation sometimes, but it was still really enjoyable. On Zeta now and looking forward to picking up other franchises as well as branching out into other Gundam timelines.

Well, I'll go ahead and suggest:
1. Watch the Compilation movie trilogy. I suggest Watching it subbed with the original audio if available.
The Trilogy cuts out the "sillier" parts of the series in a fantastic effort to make it more cinematic. Do this and enjoy. You'll note as you watch other Gundam shows, the root "tropes" that they all borrow from the Original 0079 Mobile Suit Gundam.
2. Watch the other UC shows. I'd quickly follow the Movie Trilogy with:
- 08th MS Team
- 0080: War in the Pocket
- Stardust Memory
- Zeta Gundam
- Char's Counterattack.
- Unicorn
With that you'll have a good taste of the UC Mythos/World Build that was created.
3. Go ahead and watch any of the other Gundam shows. Doesn't really matter as they're not "related" if it doesn't take place within the UC saga. Gundam Wing, Gundam 00 and G Gundam are some great Alternate Universe (AU) series to start watching.
4. Lastly, go back and watch the 0079 Mobile Suit Gundam TV series. Enjoy the camp and silliness and you'll not only:
-Appreciate the Trilogy for cutting to the meat of the Gundam story
-Enjoy the age of 0079, here and now in 2016. The show has definitely aged and you should now be immersed enough in Gundam to actually enjoy how old and dated the animation is.
-Enjoy the extended character building that the Trilogy had to cut out for time reasons. All in all, just enjoy the series. You should now no longer be soured by the animation, the OP and ED themes, etc... and again, you'll see the Gundam tropes that the other series borrow and attempt to make their own.

I am stuck on ep15 of 0079 (the newly released BD), and, well, it burned me out pretty quicker than I thought it would. I watched the movies a long time ago and then went to watch Zeta (TV) which, for a lack of a better term, "pulled me in". I am literally forcing myself to keep watching it (its like, one or 2 ep per week).
The other day I watched Macross TV (again, on BD) and did not even winked from the very first ep to the last straight seeing one after another.
Overall, I think the original Gundam is dated (slow pace, strange design, strange character developments and so on) and, to me, it is the time for The Origin to update it.
