It's a stripped-down space combat version of the Elf Bullock, which is a transforming plane MS designed for atmospheric flight. The Elf Bull prototype could operate in space (or at least high orbit) as well but the Mack Knife is essentially that design but with all the armour and aerodynamic shit removed, making it a lot smaller, agile and monkey-like. The legs are still wing-like and it can partially shift into a winged flight mode because the basic tech from the Bullock is present, and it probably helps save money for replacements.
