If it had better CGI that is, its just more of Season 1 of Voltron, which is what Season 3 should have been.
Vehicle Voltron is significantly better than all of the other Voltron shows because the source anime is significantly better than all of them as well. The details that were changed from translating Dairugger into Voltron also didn't harm the focus of the plot too much, mainly censorship. The whole fighting out of necessity rather than good vs evil from Dairugger is still present in Vehicle Voltron.

Allura says the Red Lion is temperamental in her description of it, and that he needs to show it he's worth before he can pilot it. It not dropping the shield until he's shown himself a warriors willing to die fits that. Besides which, it's still ignoring that the Blue Lion responded to a barrier touch immediately. If that theory was real, both Blue and Red would need to have not bonded and Blue clearly thought his pilot was worthy.
