Trying to get into the Braves series. Can anyone tell me what the state of subs are? I seem to remember that one of them only had crabsticks.

Also Braves thread.
>>
>>14477457
They're all subbed in proper English except Might Gaine, which has crabsticks for the second half. The subs for Exkaiser and Dagwon can only be found o.k. the YouTube channels of Silver Castle and Subdivers respectively, no torrents or anything

I suggest starting with Goldran

Thanks mate!
Any particular reason to start with goldran?
>>
>>14477766
I say to do so because it's probably the best in the series and also because it's also probably the show that gives you the most representative sample of the series as a whole, warts and all. If you can put up with the amount of stock footage and MotW in Goldran, you should be able to deal with the rest of the series. If not, then give J-Decker, Da Garn and GGG a watch and shelve the rest.
>>
>>14478054
Thanks man,
I gave Goldran and J-Decker a try. Goldran's main robot turned me off, so i'll probably start with J-Decker until I can handle a solid gold robot.
Plus I love police robots, Patlabor is my favorite anime.
>>
>>14478167
J-Decker is a lot of fun. I didn't care for Goldran either.
>>
>>14477710
>The subs for Exkaiser and Dagwon can only be found o.k. the YouTube channels of Silver Castle and Subdivers respectively

Dagwon's getting fixed in that regard, they're just doing subchecking and finishing the first few episodes (they skipped them initially to do the unsubbed episodes first) before they make a torrent.

They also did Dagwon's OVA though.

>Goldran's main robot turned me off, so i'll probably start with J-Decker until I can handle a solid gold robot.

It's not as bad in show as "solid gold robot" probably should be, they use a more muted shade rather than GOLD GOLD IN YOUR FACE THE WHOLE SHOW LONG.

Show itself is good though.

Pretty sure the character designer is a shotacon, may have drawn some porn.

Oh hey, a Brave thread! Was just about to make a thread dedicated to this, so I suppose I'll post it here instead.

Here's the J-Decker "pitch document" I posted about a couple weeks back. I believe it's missing a few pages, but without anything to compare it to I can't say which ones. Also, without many page numbers, this may not be the correct page order.

https://mega.nz/#!RBwXQASS!jUuhfUDKx2vwGZxLFovpTIVKqzJvO5FPP0ChECcCdhc

There are definitely some cool things here if you can read Japanese (which I can't).

Sorry it took me so long to scan this stuff, but better late than never, yeah?

And if you missed them, here are the animation references as well.

I've got some Might Gaine dougas as well that I might as well post.

Please excuse the crappy photos, they were too big for my scanner and I didn't want to remove them from their plastic sleeves.

Adding to that, they seem focused on subbing Ganbaruger at the moment, so this might take some time.

I know the director of this series went on to so such "classics" as Boku no Pico (and it's sequel) and some thing about a shota maid.

The character design is even worse in the actual show. For the kids at least, they're all super creepy. The adults with more normal proportions are alright.

I could barely stomach Yuuta and his super high pitched voice at first.

Braves are awesome, so far my favorites are Goldran,GGG, J decker, and Might Gaine.

Exkaiser is decent, but definitely not where the series started to really shine.

To be fair, he only did Exkaiser, DaGarn, and Fighbird.

It was the very first entry, after all. Gotta go through those early pains before gradually turning a franchise emulation (Transformers) into its own thing.

Shows in the early 90s really wanted to push the idea that rich kids are fucking assholes

The J-Decker director (Takamatsu)'s quirks differ from Yatabe's anyway; he does episodic shows, has male lead characters that look near-identical (except Gyrozetter's Kakeru, because that's a game adaptation), and includes sexy ladies whenever possible.

The main kid in Goldran is the best. He's such a moneygrubbing asshole, it's hard to believe he's a child

His plan at the end of the show to snatch victory from the jaws of the main villain was fucking great though.

It's like someone else said, Goldran is a Time Bokan show with the roles reversed. In a different case, Walter and Sharanla would be the heroes.
>>
>>14481407
None of the Time Bokan shows have proper subs, so I wouldn't know. But if Goldran is anything to go by, I'd love to watch one of them at some point

That's understandable. Still, 24 is airing this Fall, so hope that Crunchyroll or whomever else decides to pick it up (possibly leading to folks getting interested in the older entries).

Thanks man, I'm already going with J-Decker. The Patlabor type feel really strikes a chord.
>>
Which Brave shows have plot.
I've seen GGG and GGG final, and I'm currently watching Goldran, and I really wish goldran had more stakes other than a scavenger hunt across the world.
>>
>>14483197
Goldran develops a little more plot in the second half, moreso than Braves normally have. Which isn't much.

Da Garn has more plot than GGG did, but it's an exception. I haven't seen Might Gaine or Dagwon, but the rest of them have almost no plot whatsoever. The most you're going to get is these short little arcs in J-Decker that last for like 3 episodes before going right back to episodic stuff
>>
>>14483330
Technically speaking, J-Decker does spend most of the early first half introducing new team members and upgrades.
>Da Garn has more plot than GGG did, but it's an exception.
Thanks to good old Fuyunori Gobu (of Iron Leaguer fame, among others). If it weren't for his contributions, Da Garn would almost certainly have no plot. Granted, you can tell he was probably restrained from doing too much in GGG.
>>
>>14481339
>Yuuta > Seiji > Kouta > Mamoru > Chirico

fixed
>>
>>14484641
The director wanted the third series to have the plot, as it was to be his grand sendoff to the series. Of course, Gobu is probably the one responsible for the tight planning behind it.
>>
>>14485587
>The director wanted the third series to have the plot, as it was to be his grand sendoff to the series. Of course, Gobu is probably the one responsible for the tight planning behind it.
That's pretty cool. Too bad it resulted in Takara hating plot afterwards though.

That said, the head writer for the previous couple shows did help Gobu for the second half, since he had gotten ill at the time (according to the show's translator).
>>
>>14484641
>J-Decker does spend most of the early first half introducing new team members and upgrades.
Well every Brave Series does this to some extent. Even Exkaiser got in on it a bit with an arc where Exkaiser tried to figure out the signs given to him by some ancient mystics leading to him finally becoming Great Exkaiser and another arc to end the show with the Geisters finding a superweapon that was actually useful in disabling the Kaisers. But it's disingenuous to say these elements give it any degree of plot.
>>
>>14486276
True, but they help to keep some entries from being boring, when done right. Stand-alone episodes can also have their merits on occasion (like the time Dumpson and Drill Boy were stuck in small back-up bodies).
>>
bump for Braves
>>
After watching the shows, it's pretty funny how often they have the 3 man combiner get a fourth member.

Tri-Bomber/Battle Bomber
Liner Dagown/Super Liner Dagwon
Silverion/God Silverion
Guardion/Super Guardion
>>
How often were sound effects used from different studios? I was watching slayers and I heard the "bravestones/gstone shine" sound.
>>
>>14490808
A lot of shows use stock sound effect packages.
>>
>>14490803
Happens in Da Garn and J-Decker as well. I don't know what the business model was at the time, but I guess they were making more money by selling an extra toy later on or something?
>>
>>14477457
Not really into Braves, but that shota is fucking delicious. Is J-Decker good?
>>
The other night, I dreamt my town was building a statue of Might Gaine.
>>
>>14490879
>but I guess they were making more money by selling an extra toy later on or something?
Bingo. How aggressive they got with that depends on the show.
>>
>>14491408
Was it one of those dreams where you had to run out to the location and see if it was true?
>>
>>14490870
I wish I knew where to get those SFX packs, I love those stock sounds that Sunrise uses.
>>
>>14491475
Well, what always confused me about it is that they'd also sell box sets with the new member. I don't know if these were released later in the line as well, but in either case, it seems like kind of a dick move, something like what Capcom does with every modern Street Fighter game
>>
>>14491508
MartyMcFlies is set on ripping an LP filled with stock sound effects soon, so you look forward to that.

>>14491586
Now you know how Takamatsu felt when he was working on the shows. The guy developed a hateboner for Takara much faster than Tomino did for Bandai.
>>
The fact that they're going into space with windows open broke my immersion.
>>
>>14491719

Advenger is no mere train. He's also cooler than any of the Might Gaine trains and also the most awesome shoulder cannon to ever exist.
>>
>>14491719
>death_star_hangar_bay.jpg
>>
>>14491719
Hey, at least it's not Space Black Knight.
>>
>>14491794
Yeah, Advenger was pretty cool, but I wish he got to win some fights on his own.

And on Goldran, while the show was fun, it got very annoying how many episodes after they go to space end up with the Braves getting their asses handed to them, then either using a combo or Great Goldran (who's practically an attack in all appearances) to win. This made the Braves look really weak in most of their appearances (except Captain Shark since they had to shill his toy).
>>
>>14491817
Advenger pretty much singlehandedly took down the Sasorigun when using his extra weapons and then Galactica Buster. I believe that was the first time he used either

Anyway, is Goldran the only Brave show you've watched? Practically all the fights in every show are like that except for the first half of Da Garn. If anything Goldran has a little more variation than usual. Try watching Exkaiser, or worse, Fighbird. Jesus christ, those two.
>>
>>14491817
>Anyway, is Goldran the only Brave show you've watched?

Watched a few so far, but that's the only one that had one sided fights to the point that it was ridiculous. Haven't finished Fighbird or Exkaiser yet, so maybe those do it even worse.
>>
>>14491843
The problem is that they almost always want to use that lead character's stock footage finisher, and they can't justify using it if the side characters can do the job themselves. So usually, they can't.
>>
>>14491860
Shit, that does suck, even Dagwon gave the others a few finishers, and the show didn't always use the stock footage finishers (which was surprising since a few of them are only used a single time despite the attack itself being used multiple times).
>>
>>14491831
Actually, J-Decker was a bit better about it, mainly since J-Decker himself didn't really have any finisher-tier weaponry until he got Max Cannon Mode. As a result though it tends to be the Build Team Show (not that there's anything wrong with that).

>>14491843
>>14491860
Furthermore, Goldran was the apex of Takara's meddling with the shows for toy sales. It's no wonder why there wasn't a mainstay director after that.
