Still good, but didn't age as well given the slightly stronger Japanese Nationalism.
I feel 2199 was a solid remake that balanced things out and made more use of side characters. Especially submarine captain, though Analyzer's CG was jarring in a few scenes.

I watched this about a year ago and it was painful. Aside from the oudatedness, things just seemed to happen all of a sudden and you were basically told by the show to be emotionally invested in it.

Original is deeper and more meaningful. New one is funnier and easier to watch.
I'd watch original and the first actual movie (I mean, not the recapitulation/retelling movie, but the next one, Farewell Yamato, which continues where the series left). It doesn't get better than that.
