Does /m/ enjoy retro designs in their chinese cartoons?
For example in Shin Mazinger, Ankokuji looked like he was straight out of Lupin, and that's mad as fuck.

I enjoy what works. If it fits, it fits.
Mazinger is an ancient IP, in anime terms, so it worked well.
Hell, even if it was some brand new show I wouldn't care if the designs were "retro". I wouldn't care if it was a reboot of an ancient show with new designs. I'm not some autist who "hates millennial designs"

That's because Ankokuji was from the original Mazinger Z manga from 72.
I don't think it's really about old or new. A good design is a good design. As long as the art conveys what they're going for. In Shin Mazinger's case what they were going for was, "Go Nagai."
Imagawa has a thing for that. I watched through his rendition of Tetsujin lately, and the artwork for it was also very evocative of 60s anime, even moreso than Giant Robo.
I like stuff like this. It helps remind me that not all anime is generic sameface.

Tetsujin 28 might be my favorite work of his. It's not as over the top as he's usually known for and it makes for a nice period piece.

I didn't think I'd like Tomohiro Shimoguchi's modernized art for the Getter Robo Devolution manga but it ended up working for me.
