Also, a question: did Getter-3 always have it's stretchy arms, or were those added later? I didn't notice them in the manga and I can't find a decent torrent to check the original anime.
I think the extending arms were added for the srw games, which is why the G, Go, and Shin sets didn't have them either until the ovas.

I don't think Getter Gai or Poseidon have the stretchy arms at all, do they?

I think Poseidon only had them for a split second frame of animation in New, but I can't remember any other instances beyond that. It's gimmick was the fishing net for long range.
When is Getter Robo going to get a new anime?
Also why is Armageddon the most praised and known Getter anime adaptation?

When? Who knows? Maybe never.
I can only speak for myself about Armageddon but I think it captures the spirit of the manga well, if not the story. The mostly original story with bits taken from Shin Getter is kind of a plus for me too. It even added well loved stuff to the franchise like Ryoma's Black Getter and it helps that Shin Getter itself is probably the most popular Getter and is most prominent in this series.
I like the animation and the music as well. It's not perfect, the middle episodes are uneven especially directly after Imagawa fucked off, but I think they managed to patch things together well.
I think for the vast majority of people in the US this was their first exposure to Getter Robo. The ADV release came out at the height of the anime craze and was pretty widely distributed.

Armageddon is hands down my favorite Getter story simply because not only was it the one that did the most with its characters, it's also the one with the most intense and large scale action scenes. Great designs for both the characters and mecha as well. I just wish I understood why they decided to make Professor Saotome look like Dr. Wily
