The show already has itself on a nice and solid foundation. But I feel it needs to do something bold and unique, something to push itself beyond its current level. I have no idea what that thing is, but I also don't think the show will remain interesting simply by not doing anything glaringly wrong.
As it is, it's on the better side of middle of the road. It's certainly enjoyable and likable, but there's a spark it's missing. I'm not saying it should be insane and over the top like GaoGaiGar or Gurren Lagann, but it needs something that makes it stand out more.

In addition to what has been said: My biggest hope for the show is that it DOESN'T pander to its current fanbase. It somehow became a fujoshi magnet, and the greatest tragedy would be for it to succumb to the demands of those sorts.
