the Gloster Gladiator during WWII actually became useful despite it's obsolescence, it was so slow that it could cruise below stall speed of enemy aircraft, and execute very sharp turns. it was also strange in that it was a biplane with a closed cockpit, allowing it to operate in more extreme weather and altitudes than open biplanes.
in the Siege of Malta, there were 3 planes that started a myth that they alone defended against the Italian and German bomber fleets, named Hope, Faith, and Charity. Faith was later upgraded with a more modern bomber engine and 3 bladed prop. Only Faith survived the war.

The entirety of Macross is sorta like this. The SDF-1 itself obviously isn't under powered, but it does under perform for the most part due to hack job repairs + gross lack of experience with its technology.

The island they fought to defend was a critical part of the British campaign, being a port and airstrip to patrol the Mediterranean. to remember the legendary defensive flight team from Malta, the 4 RAF Falkland Island defending fighter planes bear the Maltese cross, and are named after the original flight: Hope, Faith, Charity. The fourth was given a new name. Desperation.
I think Gundam Seed had good mecha designs.

The Beetle in Getter Robo Go's kind of like that. It's some really shitty support mech compared to all the awesome prototypes in the Robot Army, until the pilot realizes it's really great at spinning, andthat's a good trick.

The Alt isn't underpowered, that thing has two Tesla Drives in it just so it can stand up. It's an armored brick that goes Sanic fast for full frontal assaults, enemy grunts look at it and think "Well that piece of shit armored artillery unit shouldn't be hard to stop, it doesn't even have long range weaponry OH SHIT IT'S RIGHT HERE AND IT'S SHOVING A STAKE THROUGH MY COCKPIT" The only underperforming part was Marion being unable to find a pilot who could move the thing without it just falling over or passing out from the G-Force acceleration.
