What do think of melee specialists in a world where everyone and their mother have a beam rifle?

Suits like Masurao and Epyon are fast enough that someone having a beam weapon doesn't matter. Masurao has ranged weapons though

That these guys are pretty badass if they can hold their own and that I'll root for them because beam rifles are the absolute worst and most lazy mecha weapon there is.

I like them they are usually interestingly designed and require a good amount of skill making them look quite impressive in combat.
I usually love them, because melee combat for the most part has much better battle choreography then the ranged. It's just better to watch.

Well, its one way to surprise the enemy, if you think about it. If everyone is trained to use a beam rifle, and suddenly this guy comes up to you and starts swinging a sword at you, you're probably fucked.
Thinking of it from a different perspective, a melee-specialised machine probably has better and faster actuators, a stronger frame to withstand the strains of melee, and probably better thrusters.

It's rule of cool. Melee combat has cooler choreography and is more visceral than just shooting a guy from as far away as you can.
Having said that, UC goes some way towards justifying this, namely in that you gotta git gud at aiming to actually be worth shit at a range, MS move fast enough to dodge and battles are close enough that MS actually do get the chance to melee. Shields also all have anti beam coating past 0079 so they can actually block shots, but a beam saber's continuous output burns right through that.
It's kind of like old matchlock firearms. Some armor could block the shots at anything other than fairly close visual range and the weapons were unreliable and inaccurate enough that melee was still very much a viable strategy, while the best way to attack at a range was massed fire formations. Pretty much everything outside of UC doesn't bother even remotely trying to justify it, however.
