Is Byston Well one of the most unique and interesting settings in mecha?
Dunbine is certainly one of the best outputs in mecha at least. Plenty of colorful mecha with cool insect motifs along with a fairy tale-ish atmosphere. And Tomino's finest finale that perfectly wraps up the story with plenty of action.
It's unfortunate that none of the other entries in the setting have been well received because they look pretty cool.

While they were in Byston Well the plot moved as much as it does in most /m/ shows. It was only once they got to Earth that there was nothing left to do except fight to a draw every episode until the grand finale.

Byston Well is like generic medieval europe with a couple of other races.
Sure there's an interesting place or race that appears once or twice, and the realm between the two world is neat but once again underused.
Even escaflowne has a more interesting fantasy world.

I actually liked the Upper Earth arc. All four massive battleships clashed, slowly making their way to each other to set up for the final battle. I suppose it could have been shorter, but I enjoyed it as it was. Throughout the arc, but especially the last 5-8 episodes, you can tell it won't be a 'happy' ending. Neither side has enough of an advantage to settle it quickly.
The best part about Dubine is that both Drake and Ciela are in the wrong. Aura machines are evil without exception; in Ciela's case it is a necessary evil but evil no less. The only difference between good and bad guys is that the good ones realize there can be no winner; all the machines and their operators have to be destroyed. The bad guys don't understand and are convinced on their own righteousness that they can come out alive.
It's something you don't see very often in any anime.

The mecha design is cool in concept art >>14430562 but it looks like shit most of the time in the actual serie.
Monsters barely appear and fairies are cool but it's just not enough.
It started great and I wanted to like it, but most of the episodes are random air battle near a forest, mountain or ocean until the bad guys run away for some reason. Felt like the writters and animators were on automatic pilot.

Those random battles that have no purpose is something every Tomino series has. I think they're at least pretty entertaining battles.
