Who is the bigger sellout?
Macross is better than Evangelion and Anno's beard is ugly.

Kawamori is US lawsuit scam victim, so Anno because he's a scammer..
Well, Kawamori at least seems to be having fun. Is Anno having any fun?

Anno, not even a question. Kawamori's always enjoyed aidorus and likes to cram them in everything he makes, money or not.

Any artist who wants to make a living with their craft is "selling out". Making money with your creativity is an honor, not an insult. Only the untalented creators and plebs who have never created anything think "selling out" is negative.
>>14409265
pretty sure robokeks would probably like zero more than any other series, barring plus.
>>14408366
Both of them were pandering hard in the very first things they ever created
If you think of selling out as losing artistic or literary merit, neither had any to begin with
>>14408366
Anno gave us animator expo so he's still cool.
>>14409376
how was macross pandering? unless kawamori was lead story-wise prior.
>>14408366
Neither of these men were artistes creating works for the love of the craft and no monetary gain. They do their job to make money and a living. A sellout would generally not be someone who works in anime studios.
And Kawamori has literally never changed since the 80s, like at all. Anno is just lazy
>>14409376
Eva was not the first thing he created.
Hella rude to Kawamori...show some respect neckbeard.
He hasn't sold out as much as Anno has.
>>14409928

Those fucking Rebuild movies are fucking sellouts if I've ever seen.
You don't see Kawamori redoing the OG series like Gundam and Yamato has done....yet. LOL.
>>14409943
Kawamori has said on a few occasions he has no plans to revisit SDF. All of his new works are actual sequels.
I never remember there being a series a Nintendo DS pachinko games of Evangelion.
Kawamori makes what he wants, even if what he wants is sometimes not good. Sometimes it's outright terrible.
But anyway you can't deny it's Anno. Evangelion is a merchandise brand in of itself. Something Macross, even if Kawamori tried, could never do.

>all-japanese crew
>only communicate with Japan
>the entire world put all their hopes on Japan to save humanity
So standard Japanese fiction tropes from around that time then?
>>14410072
Them being standard doesn't change that they're jingoistic. I can point to a million American works in the time of Teddy Roosevelt that were standard and were jingoistic as well.
And the standard is what makes the exceptions stand out that much more. Cyborg 009 was written in the 60s, and yet it was still a multinational team where everyone was a fully fleshed out character that contributed to the team, no one was added for the sake of tokenism.
>>14410072
no, you don't understand, Japanese people making works for Japanese people to reflect Japan need more things that white American college kids jack off to
>>14410141
Nice strawman. I would have just as much of a problem with it if it was an American work, or a French work, or a Chinese work, or whatever.

>>14410130
>no one was added for the sake of tokenism.
Oh that's CUTE.
>>14410222
What the fuck are you even talking about?
Nationalism is not inherently bad, jingoism is. Jingoism is an overinflated belief in the superiority of your nation and people just on principle, held by people who have done nothing to contribute to their nation's greatness. A nationalist takes pride in their nation and wishes to make it the best it can be, a jingoist believes it already is and nothing needs to change.
It's no different from the people who brag about being rich because they were born into a rich family. What is there to brag, you did nothing to earn that, the sweat is not from your brow.

Anno literally caved to public pressure to alter his vision for a show's ending, not just by releasing some information that expanded on what happened or retconned it, but by releasing actual fucking animation where it's all different.
Meanwhile, the show's characters adorn everything from ramen, air fresheners, and coffee to canned bread, Doritos, and shaving cream + razors. There are NERV anti-slip mats, motherfucking barrels for storing your water or whatever, make-up applicator brushes, and a goddamn toilet.

>>14410605
It wasn't Gainax, it was the rest of the owners. The story of how Evangelion came to be is... complicated. For many years it was owned by Gainax, Tatsunoko, Sega, TV Tokyo and King Records, and if one of them didn't want something related to the merchandise Gainax had to comply. Sega supposedly blocked Eva from getting in SRW 4 because it was a Famicom tittle.

It sure as shit wasn't written with the intent to market all this superfluous bullshit, which only came later and only exists to farm cash from otaku.

I'm not sure how that worked since SRW 4 came out around half a year before EVA aired (March vs October 1995), even if we take the manga into consideration there's no way they could integrate it in such a way that it wouldn't spoil the plot before the anime aired unless LOL UNIT ONLYYes, Kato is going to release a Limited Edition N-Gauge railway model set of the Shinkansen 500 Series Type EVA and it costs 30,000 Yen

What was it about Eva that broke the Japanese otaku? It's a pretty standard super robot anime all things considered, maybe a little more edgy but it was the 90s and if your shit wasn't depressing you weren't trying hard enough.
But there's nothing in Eva that sets it apart -- in a bad way, I mean -- from other anime at the time. It had the harem elements in some episodes but it wasn't Tenchi Muyo. What I mean is, WHY? Why is Eva anime Star Wars?
Is it the meta-narrative behind the story, of Anno's spiraling depression? Was it Gainax's lack of any shame when it came to merchandise? How was Evangelion the cultural landmark it is today?

I've always asked the same questions about Tetsujin, Mazinger and Gundam. The answers I concluded for the former two is that in Japan, they only had a handful of television stations back in the 60s and early 70s, as with America, so kids had little else to watch.
I have no idea with Gundam and Eva. I'm guessing Eva was just in the right place at the right time. It may not have been original, but it had just the exact right blend of nonsense that people were looking for at the time. Why they were looking for something like Eva is beyond me, but human nature is always hard to understand.

"For people around the world to see the work we created more than 30 years ago is something I can appreciate. That said the fact that the content has been altered without any of us knowing anything about it is saddening. The most frustrating fact about this though is that the original creators and staff, not only myself, but Haruhiko Mikimoto, Ichiro Itano, Noboru Ishiguro and even the other members of Studio Nue, were not credited for the past TV broadcast of Robotech. Not only them, but also all the other various staff involved, including many animators who had worked on the original series. While the concept of accreditation may differ around the world, I would be very disappointed if this is going to be released online without crediting the people who originally made it."

Not that Urbandictionary is an authority or anything, but to people who actually give a shit about the word, this is what it means in the common conciousness
>For instance, Green Day. They are considered sell-outs because they are a punk band who was popular on MTV. Green Day never stated that they would never be on MTV, thus they are not sell-outs in that sense. They never changed their musical style for monetary reasons, thus they are are not sell-outs in the more literal sense of the word. If Fugazi were to sign up with Sony records, they would be selling out because they preach against major labels.
