I can't say as I really but this argument. It's like saying the VF-1 shouldn't have been a mass produced unit. Nothing about the VF-19, VF-25 or VF-31 looks or feels too heroic to be used as a grunt, especially if you give it a less flamboyant color scheme like the VF-31A already has. Even if it was, you could design a new unit rather than reusing the VF17/171/EX three series in a row.

The 171 was based on the 17 but made to be a general purpose unit that isn't hard to use unlike the 17 which was more of a special operations VF.
And with all the upgrades they would have given it, the 171 is better than the 17 now, and stuff like Frontier's 171EXs are probably the best variants of the 171 out there.

I don't really have a problem with it in and of itself, because yea, there's definitely justification for it. I have a problem with it more because Kawamori says that the newer VF's are too heroic (which I don't think isn't true) to make for good grunts and because he hasn't designed something less heroic to replace it even if he thinks existing designs are too heroic.
I'd also say it's kind of silly that the average pilot has been using the same airframe for 3 separate tv shows and for about 33 years in universe, where the VF-1 Valkyrie, VF-4 Lightning III and VF-11 Thunderbolt all had maybe half that as their shelf life (a lot less for the VF-1) as the main stay of the armed forces and two of them didn't even feature in any real capacity in actual shows. It seems like a wasted opportunity from a marketing perspective and just makes it kind of boring to see the same basic design showing up each time, even if there's some differences and fluff means the specs are different.

Well we've known with a while that the Siegfried is a lot worse off than any of them and even the Draken isn't as technologically advanced as any of them. Hayate will probably get a super prototype to replace them in some movies or something, but I doubt he's getting one in the tv show.

But the YF-29's extra weight comes almost entirely from its engines. It should be faster, have stronger ECA, stronger PPBs, and a stronger, heavy quantum beam gunpod. It can also supercharge its PPB with the output of the auxiliary engines to exceed the Mach 5.5+ atmospheric speed limit, so outrunning it isn't possible for a lower spec machine.
As for the fold boost, the YF-29 runs on a slightly older version of the same system and can be boosted the same way. Hell, we've SEEN it before.
The YF-29 is THE definition of a super prototype at this point.

That's cool and all, but that's entirely your opinion. Kawamori has a different opinion. That argument ends there.
As for the older valks, they still get mass produced and sold to poor colonies. Using the same variable fighter makes sense because it's the last major one that the government supported and distributed far and wide. It has a ton of support, is easily modified (EX) and is a versatile and easy to handle craft. Once per Just cause we see them getting blown up to make our protagonists look better doesn't mean they don't serve their purpose in-universe.

Though I disagree, it is possible to make that argument for the VF-25 (Though it makes no sense for a universal multi-role fighter like the VF-25 to be designed for better space use).
But that doesn't work for the YF-29. It has forward swept wings and forward canards just like the VF-31. It was very clearly designed for atmospheric combat and tight, low speed turns in the same way the VF-31 was. It's low speed turning radius is a moot point at any rate since they both have 360° swiveling beam guns on their backs, which the YF-29 would win on a trade because of TWO MDE spec beams as opposed to one non-MDE beam and stronger PPB/ECA for tanking hits. And that's before you get to the point that the wing engines swivel for maximum maneuverability in the same way the SV-262's Lil Drakens do.
I'm not arguing whether the YF-29 is super expensive or not. I'm just saying that it is definitely the strongest valk right now overall and stupidly overpowered.
Personally, I think that Kawamori set the VF-31 slightly back in spec so that the inevitable YF-32 or whatever in the Delta movies can take that throne away without breaking a sweat.

Talking hardware is fun. The VF-31 should at least be able to carry the 3 MRAAM bundle and air to air rockets the VF-25 seems to love so much. A bit disappointed the Super Seigfried seems to have less overall armor and engines than the Super Messiah though.

Cost is the only consideration at that point. The YF-29 does almost everything the VF-31 does, better, faster, and stronger. At the very least, it would hopefully prevent them from getting their asses kicked by Sv-262s every other week while still fulfilling the their atmospheric combat doctrine. Or maybe not since or MCs seem to need a little more training in general. The only things it lacks are the multi-drones, their associated recharger, and an improved Sound Booster on the Super Pack (though it does have a Fold Wave booster on its Super Pack).
All we've seen from the VF-31 are atmospheric dogfights, carrying fold waves from singers to the middle of the battlefield and dance of light shenanigans. For all the purposes Walkure was created for, the YF-29 is better. It's an elite dogfighter, not a mass-produced one and Walkure and Delta Squad are supposed to be elite. The only person who should still be in a VF-31 is Chuck, because the only other comparable fighter with a radome is the RVF-25 and the VF-31E's storable radome and forward swept wings makes it VASTLY superior.
The only reason you think it wouldn't work (even if they could afford it) is that the war is bigger than just Walkure, which it is. But why keep using VF-31s in that case anyway? What does it do better that makes it better suited towards fighting tons of converted NUNs ships?

The Kairos has one hardpoint under each wing, but in space that hardpoint (which is on the arm shield) is used to attach the extra shield armor. There's no hardpoint under the outer wing, either according to the line art, the model kits, or the in-anime 3D model, unlike on the YF-30.
The Siegfried *does* have a hardpoint on the outer wing though (confirmed by line art, in-show 3D model, and all the model kits - though not by the DX toy prototypes), and could presumably carry heavy ordnance there even with Super parts.
Also, the VF-27 and YF-29 both look like they too have a single hardpoint under each wing, if I've interpreted the panel lines on the model kits correctly. They'd go just inboard of the outer engines on the VF-27, and near the edge of the thick, non-sliding section of the wing on the YF-29. The VF-27 might even have a matching set on top as well, kind of like the VF-0 or the Sv-51.

I find it weird that people always refer to it as the panties episode, like that's the only thing that happens in the episode or even a major thing within it - when really it's a quick chase with a few gags that's done in a couple of minutes and has no actual fan service outside seeing Sheryl's panties on Ai. Which isn't fan service in reality. Even then, it's broken up by Ranka going off to work and Leon talking to someone for well over a minute.
The episode is far from the most packed or essential in the show, but does feature the introduction of Ai and Brera, the first singing of Aimo, and thus the first clue about Ranka's connection to the Vajra and has Sheryl making some overt moves in her relationship with Alto. It just seems weird that people keep trying to paint it as just the Sheryl's Panties episode. It'd be like referring to episode 9 of Delta as the Freyja's jealous episode. Yea, it's there and it's not the most packed episode or anything, but it's hardly the only thing in the episode.
So I finally got caught up with the rest of Macross recently and I'm ready to watch Delta
But before I do, I want to know how bad the QUALITY is. Is this something I should wait for the DVDs for?
