This isn't fine art, it's mecha anime. If it's entertaining, it's fine. If the story is very important to the enjoyment of the anime, then yeah plot is important, but for something like Gundam the plot isn't the be-all end-all. Gundam usually doesn't suffer from bad writing anyway, it's just nothing special.
What more do you want from a toy commercial about robots blowing each other up?
