Zeon isn't a stand-in for Germany and it never has been. It's Imperialist Japan with a thin veneer of Nazi in terms of the naming conventions and conventions. Aggressive expansionism, a lack of raw materiel that in part drives said expansionism, political infighting among an aristocratic military class, early adoption of their own form of more mobile "carrier warfare" in the advent of mobile suit technology: hell even their own "Co-Prosperity Sphere" at one point. On the other side the Feds were the dominant economic and political power that initially suffer a series of humiliating losses but brings it back with their productive capability and a series of mass-produced war machines that their enemy can't keep pace with.
Zeon's attitudes in combat are meant to evoke sympathy the same way suicide pilots were thought of in romanticized terms, and the Federation is demonized by painting them as domineering and oppressive. Kiki being raped in the novelization falls right into that pattern, with rape during the battle of Okinawa having been a serious accusation against the American invasion forces.
Whether it's deliberate or merely the result of Japan's muddled and (at least in my opinion) fucked-up social memory of the war is open to debate, but the parallels are there.

This same thing happened in 0079, except replace Americans and their planes with a Canadian and his Gundam. Gigantic Mobile Armors work as a stand-in for the big ass warships (like the Yamato and the Musashi, the former of which had a saying that Japan could not lose if it was still afloat) Japan built to offset their numerical disadvantage.
But in the end, Japan continues to glorify it's actions during the war. We've all seen SEED, which the finger to the original series in this regard with it's "fuck yeah not-Japan. Monarchy FTW" morality.

Militarily, China would rape Japan in a one-to-one battle. They have the single largest force on earth (2 m active 2 m reserve) and 714 warships.
It's shitty, ie only one aircraft carrier, a somewhat weak air force, too many men to easily transport. But the size is just inexorable compared to Japan.
