The manga is a retelling of the entire original series with various tweaks to everything and includes about 3 volumes of added material in the form of flashback arcs from pre-oyw detailing events that led up to the war and the opening battles of the war primarily from Char's POV.

Although it's starting to seem like the Origin version of events is beginning to override the timeline established by various books and technical manuals that we're all familiar with. Both the Guntank and Guncannon that appeared in the Origin seem to have gotten reworked into "early" versions to work the events of the Origin into the mainline continuity, and MSD (Origin's equivalent of MSV) seems to be putting quite the effort into tieing it into the established universe at large (especially with the RX-78-01N.)

Guntanks aside, I was more surprised by bipedal mobile weaponry-- the Mobile Worker (eventually distilled down to the Zaku I) was still the "first" bipedal mobile weapon. I suppose I wasn't expecting to see a federation answer so soon in the form of the Guncannon being an upright weapon.
Just always thought that the first Fed upright weapon to debut was/would be the prototype Gundam.

In the manga the EF catches wind of Zeon's plans for creating a new military ms and tasks Tem Ray with creating their own next gen bipedal machine. However AE gets involved and essentially takes over the project. They cut corners and don't have the foresight to predict how ms combat will evolve or what role they will play in battle and basically just make a guntank with legs for cheap.
After it gets massacred in its first engagement Tem uses the incident to get approval for his gundam project without AE meddling after their screw up on the guncannon.

When a narrative has contradictions or contrivances, it breaks down it's integrity. This is how people see past lies. The Origin was never written to replace 0079, it was an alternate retelling, so when you take these stupid parts from the flashbacks and superimpose them on the preexisting narrative they haven't changed, it creates big discrepancies. That's why ANT or the novel adaptations aren't considered canon. To put it simply, as Bandai said all animated works are official canon, they mean that's what side stories and such are written around. Many of the recent animated works contradict others, however. It's a mess of a franchise.

The idea that Zeon was suddenly able to pull ahead of them scientifically in the course of about 3 years of development, leaving the Federation completely helpless for 9 months until they captured and reverse-engineered Zeon weaponry into their own advanced mobile suits. It's the perfect example of laziness on the author's part to come up with early Federation artillery.

it is more than possible that the federation still struggled with MS technology despite developing the guntank years ahead because the guntank barely counts as a MS, the only thing that would count would be the fact that it has arms so the only real aspect that the federation got right about mobile suits was the limb technology, and there's also the fact that the guntank was a technological dead end that they ended development on and didn't restart until zeon brought out better MS
