That actually makes it even more of a painful situation for them because suddenly they have to decide if it's better to have the option to bug out with a wormhole or to have the Blue Lion on the field. Not to mention losing Shiro would mean losing the Galra arm that they constantly used to solve problems. It's a big loss that would hurt them significantly, and that's the value of it.
Regardless of whether they do it or not, though, the fact that we can have the argument is definitely a positive. Going into this show there was no question that Shiro was going to die, but now? Now we're not so sure, and that means if he does die it'll be a surprise.

Well it's not like it's just the worm hole drive she's necessary for. It's just an example of a system only she can run. I think they might have also said she was necessary to operate the plasma shielding, but I'm not sure on that one. I know Corran can operate the ship in her absence, but even by his own words, all he's doing is emergency support and his options are limited once she's gone. While it's possible the show could present the kind of if/or situations you're suggesting, I don't think this is the kind of show to put the characters under that kind of stress or drama.
I'd also say that Shiro himself still has a good deal of growth to go through, to discover his past, to deal with Haggar and the druids and to become a better leader than Zarkon, so that the Black Lion can't be stolen from him by his enemy because his bond with it is too strong. If it was going to happen I'd say it's not till at least all that is done, and that that will obviously take at least one more season and probably more. I'd say it wouldn't be till at least Zarkon is defeated and they're presented with a new enemy who isn't a past Paladin he has connections to that it'd happen, by which point they may have found new Altians or Pidge and Hunk may have rejiggered the Castle to operate on someone else's command and not just hers.
