Pretty much any robot from the 70s. Take your pick. Most stuff from the 80s is good too. Mecha didn't start being stupidly busy and overdesigned until the 90s, and even then, it was only a handful, the majority of it coming from western artists. Same is true today, though you do see a bit more crappy overdesigned shit than you used to from Japanese developers, like VVV, Demonbane and so forth. Hell, it's for that very reason I have a bit of an issue with Mazinkaiser.

I think that's why the original Gundam series is so popular.
The mechs are all simple, semi blocky, designs. And they all work aesthetically with that in mind.

I was never a big fan of it myself. It's one of my favorite designs in the MMZ series, but that's not saying a lot for me.
It doesn't look the slightest bit mecha to me, and the art style making him indistinguishable from a girl isn't doing it any favors

Base design is pretty simple, anyway. Once he starts animating though, things get complicated real quickly.
