Doubt it. Ratings dropped from BFs (1.64% to 1.42%) and the video sales were even works. BF averaged 9351, whereas Try only averaged 4441.
I'm guessing it's either Try has more toys, or they think Try has a broader appeal since it toned down the nerdy bits.

It was probably worked on and finished first, since it's staff was around. It had lower media sales and gunpla sales by all accounts though, so no, nips didn't prefer it.
Try OVA is probably a more natural extension of the series.
GBF, otoh, would have decide where it's taking place. I'd almost like for it to take place at the start of Try, if only to give us a look at where Sei is now and what professional gunpla battles look like.

Not necessarily. Amazing Red Warrior wasn't shown or implied to have any plavsky hax abilities and neither did Ral's Dom which was able to keep up with it. Lightning also made it to the end of the U-19 nationals without using any plavsky hax and was just really well built.
I'd say that there are still a fair amount of "Normal" gunpla in the world tournament. Using hax like that doesn't fit every style after all.

Ral's Gouf R35 didn't seem to have any either until it teamed up with Chinan for the whirling attack.

True, but a lot of the top end gunpla end up having some kind of gimmick, otherwise it'd be difficult to keep up with the ones that do. The episode where Sei, Reiji, and Mao take on the "world tournament class" Apsalus was intended to point out that plavsky manipulation is to be expected.

Heck, the "Reiji, meet the old school crew!" scenes seemed to imply battling was a thing already when they souped up the system with particles.

Considering that Gunpla Battle after Plavsky Particles' discovery has been going on for 10 years when S1 started (its widespread was referred as the Gunpla Battle Boom by Ral in episode 3), "old school crew" could have just been referring to old school Gunotas before Gunpla Battle became mainstream.
