To reach the singularity, we need to have AI smarter than us.
Right now, we can't even make AI dumber than us, much less our equal. The one thing we do know is that we are pretty sure we cannot make a real AI with our current computer technology or programming mediums. There is no combination or application of binary circuitboards that is going to result in AI, we need high end quantum computing the likes we have only barely scratched the surface of.
Baring an absolutely revolutionary leap forward in technology, I wouldn't an AI to exist within our children's lifetimes, much less our own. We should get there eventually, but there are just too many unknown steps between here and there for me to expect it to happen any time soon.

I think machine learning is a really interesting idea that could, potentially, save us a lot of work and end end up more flexible computers. But I don't think its going to totally replace code or the people who write code.
There are just too many applications that you need to code for, not all of which are machine learning appropriate, and every one of THOSE is a unique case.
Machine Learning is like the invention of a new tool in a factory. You are going to make the factory workers better at their job, and it its a tool that eliminates a whole step or more of the building process then you might replace a handful of factory workers on the assembly line. But even a fully automated factory still needs some human presence and oversight in order to direct, build, and maintain the machines that actually create the product.
