It's fun. It helps break up the monotony of watching the serious business play out in other Gundam series. It's a super robot show, so if you are not prepared for weaponized rose blossoms and horse-piloted mecha, then you should probably skip it for now.
If I were you, I'd wait until the BDs come out. God knows 20+ year old anime could use the cleaner looks.

I don't get this argument. Both have wildly different stories, and their only real similarity is that both feature martial arts. I guess Daimos and every other anime that feature martial arts are also DBZ clones.
Besides, you say that like it's a bad thing, when DBZ's only real problems are that it goes on too long and has too much filler. G Gundam, being a shorter series, doesn't have these problems to near the same extent if you consider it to have them at all. I really liked G Gundam's episodic stories and their manly drama

The only impression I get when you say it's only liked by Toonmai fags is that you're a casual who has only seen Dragonball Z and whatever Gundam was shown on Toonami.
I like G, but the early part of the series really drags. Then after some good stuff hits it devolves into training episodes. Once the show gets to Hong Kong it gets and remains good.

Its great. Its one of the few non-war drama gundam series that I will fully acknowledge. If anything its closer to a martial arts movie but with gundams and a TV series.

That's because both are influenced by wuxia. Those things you described are things that are prevalent in the genre. DB started as a comedic take of Journey to the West, one of China's oldest fantasy and wuxia novel. Freaking Goku is pretty much Toriyama doing his own version of the Monkey King.
Meanwhile, G Gundam doesn't even hide that it has a character named after the villain from The Smiling, Proud Wanderer (Toho Fuhai/ Undefeated of the East), among other wuxia references.

Honestly at first I thought the very first Hong Kong episodes were terrible, if only because it felt like a joke that had long outstayed its welcome. Throughout most of the series at that point I had watched Master Asia beat Domon time and time again, and I figured that when Shining defeated Devil in the highlands and Domon used God to defeat Master Asia, Domon had finally attained his true super mode and surpassed his corrupt master, and that was the end of it.
So when he only barely managed to reach Hong Kong at max speed in the nick of time, and Master Asia had not only got there before him, but also his Master Gundam was restored like new once again, the show felt incredibly frustrating to watch.

Despised initially because of how jarring it went from war drama to martial arts ideology and how the creators wished to express different forms of love: It only recently started being analyzed for its story by its own merits instead of being faulted for not being more of the same, which is meme for how Gundam fans react to new properties in the franchise.
If you like old martial arts films and wish to watch a Gundam series with a decent to very well done romance: Give G Gundam a shot. You can skip to the Shinjuku arc after the character introductions if you want. They were basically just making a game of "where is the Shining Gundam this time" before figuring out what they wanted to do as this series was just Bandai wanting "more Gundam but different". All of that info was in the interviews on the collectors box set DVDs. It's silly and overdramatic, but that's the charm of those old Kung-fu films. The OST is also nice.
