***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Just about as confirmed as Woundwort from the GBF polls or GM from the RG teaser ages ago.
That is to say, not. They just want to see what people say. If anything it does solidify Sword impulse, but it probably brings Destiny Impulse to a "huh, maybe." and HGCE Destiny to a "Consider this, how much do you think we could milk this frame?"

Been working on this guy for a little while now. I fucking love these origin kits, and I also love Doms so this is a really fun build for me. I can't wait for my origin prototype hi-mo zaku to get here.
>>
>>14328787
I like how the origin kits have a pretty good focus on detail for hg kits. Were the decals a major pain?
Meanwhile I'm aching to buy the origin Zaku I but I decided to save for an airbrush and that will never happen if I keep buying kits.
>>
>>14328804
How much spending money do you have a month where you need to "save" longer then a month in order to make such a purchase? If your cashflow is that low that you can't just make a $600 purchase on a whim whenever, maybe it's better off if you find a new hobby.

Sonny, there's having a hobby and then there's over indulgence. Some hobbies have hefty price tags as a barrier to entry, but gunpla isn't one of them.
That aside everyone has different living circumstances, medical bills, cost of living, a still developing career.. some of us just can't burn through money like it's nothing.

Keep dreaming.

Even the most advanced prosthesis pale in comparison and i mean EPICALLY FAIL in dexterity and fine motor control when compared to flesh and blood limbs, i mean - there's no prosthesis that actually has an actuated thumb, lol!.

They are also awkward to use and counter intuitive.

Make no mistake they beat having no hand or cheapo prosthetic by a landslide, but actual augmentations, I.E - matching and surpassing actual limbs are decades away.

And that's assuming we can actually learn to integrate them into the nervous systems, instead of controlling the by flexing your pecs and upper arm muscles, like now.

Working on my second gunpla, tried a bit of seam hiding with plastic cement last night. The line's still there, it's just duller. Do I need to put enough cement on the seam that it pushes out when I put the two halves together?
>>
>>14329514
yes, you need to create an excess of plastic and then proceed to sand the plastic down to make the seam disappear
>>
This is a lucrative idea but...

If I start producing quality content on YouTube reviewing Gunpla, will stores start sending me free kits?

I might be willing to put in some time and effort if I get some.
>>
>>14329527
Here's the thing. Do you have an established viewer base that's at least 30,000 viewers? Do your videos get 1,000,000+ views within minutes of being uploaded?

If you answered no to one or both of those questions, why would ANY store send their merch to some literally who that isn't even internet famous?
>>
>>14329527
it would need to be pretty high quality and get shitloads of views, and you'd basically need to be an expert, see matthias wandel with carpentry, he occasionally gets sent free tools from companies to review, but not much. you'd also need to shill hard for those stores, talking about their selection or some shit, and reviewing just gunpla might not qualify you for that

so no, they won't

>>
>>14329635
You want to thin it so that it covers the surface uniformly and doesn't glob up. If you're worried about it running, get Tamiya masking tape
>>
>>14329625
Sanding helps, but there'll still be some marks left. I think top coat helps hide it more, but the only one true way to make nub marks disappear completely is painting the kit.

I see you've got some space marines in the back. You would do the same to the gundam. Clip off the pieces with a clipper and then file it down with a file or sandpaper. You could also scrape them away softly with a hobby knife.

The detail on these origin kits is phenomenal but yeah the stickers were a bit of a pain, but the pay off on how good they look when it was all done made it worth the effort imo. I actually had a harder time with the stickers on my prototype Gouf for whatever reason. The hardest ones for me were the ones that go around the feet since you gotta make sure that the little words in the middle of the lines match up with the center of the foot.

I'm super fucking hyped for the Zaku I, I'll probably end up getting two of them. I also still gotta get the Black Tristars Zakus.

600 is fine for an initial (right after triming the nub), but it's going to leave some scratches. Go to an automotive shop and find some 1000 grit. Usual process for me is cut from runner, trim with xacto knife, 600 grit, 1000 grit.

these are the sticks I use and the lowest grit is like 100ish I use it to get rid or the rest of the gate since I cut away obviously I'm not going to use that low grit on flush plastic. but I work up to the higher grits. Trying to get rid of that nub with 600 or higher would take a year.
>>
>>14330028
No not really, they would have to be top notch for people to buy em.

Most of what I've seen is basically "professional paint job" pay 100 bucks for thinyourpaints.jpeg.

I would buy painted kits to salvage or use for spare parts, but only at the cost of the kit or lower since I don't get to build it.
>>
>>14330034
The process I use is:
Cut piece from runner (cutting far away from the piece) > trim with xacto > 600 grit > 1000 grit
Which doesn't take that long at all, and sounds a hell of a lot easier than what you're doing.
>>
would you recomend using the micromesh pads on flat pieces? will it round the pieces because it doesn't have a hard backing?

Okay, I'm using my Jim Command as a testbed to practice seam hiding on. The legs went alright, but the arms ended up a little rough. The brush would slip patch the edge of the piece and get plastic cement on the side of the part, which required a little more sanding. You can still barely see the lines on the legs up close, the arms are a little more noticeable, but from 2-3 feet away they're practically invisible.

The actual problem is its extremely difficult to actually implant something like that and leave it there long term because of rejection, which is something all kinds of medical implants and transplants have been dealing with since forever and which has no apparent solution.

We're making progress in the area of interfacing technology and the human brain, but we haven't really made any progress with regards to permanently integrating large pieces of technology with the human body for a long time.

To put it bluntly, this picture is a pretty good example of how not to weather. It looks like you just put charcoal on your hands and smeared it all over the model. When weathering, you should keep in mind how large the robot is, where dirt and grime would actually accumulate, etc.

One day science is going to come to it's senses and realize that the wave of the future is not cybernetics, it's cyberbiotics.

But as long as the fundamentalist right holds sway in most developed countries, research into genetics will forever be stunted.

We're putting too much effort into writing more and more complex computer code when we should be focusing efforts into cracking the code that already exists in all of us.

Because all they do is take a model and make it look like shit. The point of weathering is to make it look more "realistic," like it's been operating in the field.

but weathering is subjective. some people like the "been through hell and back" look and some people like subtlety.
There is no point trying to emulate realism or even talking about it when we're talking about giant robot model kits because they don't exist in our reality, we have nothing to base it on. Whatever notions we have of realistic weathering exists only in our imaginations. So don't judge someone's weathering just because YOU think its too heavy or applied in areas you wouldn't apply it.
>>
>>14330453
Who hurt him?
>>
>>14330700
See, I agree with you to an extent, but you can have a level of realism, even if they don't actually exist. For example, it would probably be a lot dirtier and worn out at the feet compared to the torso or head. The type of dirt and grime would also play a factor.

Also, there's a bunch of jet fighters that are actually larger than gundams (F-106 delta dart, F-15 eagle, MiG-31 foxhound, etc.), so the "it's too big" argument doesn't really hold water.
>>
>>14330700
Just admit you did a shit job weathering and move on.
>>
>>14330700
Tbf, there's a difference between weathing to make a kit look like it's been through hell and back, and just randomly smearing paint & ink on it in an attempt to make it look like it's been through hell and back. Just scribbling a line marker on bits of armor and plastering on brown paint without considering where it would naturally accumulate makes it just look bad. Use photos of soldiers and vehicles that have been in the field for a while as a reference. Think about where dirt and grime would accumulate while this big MS is walking around the field.
>>
>>14330747
ms can move, walk, fly, go underwater, in space get knocked down in ways nothing else we know of can when it operates in combat. Yes mud might accumulate on the feet or it might get knocked down in combat and have mud on the shoulder. You don't know and you can't say definitively "weathering would not look like this on the model" because you don't understand what the modeler is trying to achieve.

You have a point, but there's a point where you make it look like the robot is battle damaged, and a point where it looks like you just dripped paint on it and made it look like it ran down the model.

Typically with weathering you follow a "less is more" approach. The less you put on, the more it has to contrast with the actual paint job, and colors of the model. Take my Tau Commander. most of the weathering is concentrated on the feet and back, since the thrusters would leave soot, and it landing would cause dirt to kick up and scrape the legs.

You want to go for a more "what would have caused this" ideology, otherwise it'll come off looking like they literally just fell onto the ground and rolled around in the dirt like a pig for no reason.
>>
>>14330756
You can weather it in all those ways without making it look like you just rubbed a bit of ink on random parts. It doesn't take much effort at all to have standards for your work.

So, MG Unicorn, should I just topcoat everything except the psychoframe before even starting assembly? Has anyone tried backing the phychoframe parts with silver to catch more light?
>>
>>14330917
Nah, always preassemble first to check fitment. You won't even have to take it back apart to do the topcoat, the FA Unicorn will take itself apart for you.
>>
>>14330917
I'm currently in the process of backing the small amount of psychoframe on my Nu Ver Ka with the silver bits. IT really does catch more light and make the psycho frame shine brighter.

As for top coat, I suggest taking all the clear bits off before top coating in sections. With the Nu you can just take out the smaller psychoframe bits and just spray it all, but with the Unicorn, I'm not 100% sure, but isn't the psycho frame built into and apart of the inner frame, not just some small pieces placed over it like in the Nu? I'm assuming so, so you'll probably want to build it all, paint the panel lines, then take it apart in sections and top coat the non-translucent parts first.
