Based on my (severely limited and very spotty) knowledge of military ranking insignia (or at least those similar to the branches of the US military), I *think* the blank square is basically equivalent to a "slick-sleeve" (i.e a regular private/seaman sans the chevron/hash; basically straight outta boot). First dot is I think Private, second Corporal, third Sergeant. From what I've seen in the shows, the diamonds would be officers, right?
