Kai didn't say Lance was rescuing Shiro wrong, just that Kai wasn't going to let Lance be the one to rescue Shiro - presumably because Kai wants to one up Lance and prove himself a better person by doing it instead, even if it means doing so in the most petty way possible. But you're right, it does kinda reduce fiction to being one big joke, as if it's unworthy of being treated with respect. Everything is a trainwreck, the only way to salvage is to take the first step and admit you were shit to begin with.
I like to believe it's just the zeitgeist of our generation, though. Eventually it'll run its course and people will take stories seriously, without impulsively writing it off as garbage from the getgo, without the need for a wink and a nudge as some seal of approval for quality work.

They are only using the terminology though imo. The rest of the concepts is more from the American versions. For example the Android troops are directly a retcon from the Americanized version as the lack of any non-blue Galra including Haggar/Honerva who has also been changed to blue now.

I think you underestimate how much Joaquim Dos Santos (the director of Voltron) was in the creative process of Legend of Korra. From what Michale and Bryan have revealed bts many of the dumber ideas such as pro-bending were all influences from him.

Quite possibly. I know nothing of him, nor have I looked in to Korra's bts drama. What I do know is that the two Avatar creators are big fans of love drama, love playing to and messing with fans and wanted to make many things in both Avatar and Korra worse, like originally wanting to make both Azula and Toph male. They were also the ones pushing for the shortened season order in Korra and for self contained seasons with no over arching plot by all accounts. Dos Santos may have made some bad decisions there too, but they certainly made many of the worst ones from what I can tell. I guess time will tell with Voltron though.

Honestly, I felt like there was a lot of fawning over old school Allura in general, although not always in a romantic sense. So, I grew up watching the english dub, fucking loved it, but I was like 6 at the time.
20 years later, I buy a few dvd's, and wow, the dub did not age gracefully. I'm sure if I found episodes of Golion, I may appreciate more, but goddamn that english VO.
I saw the previous reboot, which tried to act as some pseudo-continuation of the english dub. The whole production seemed like it was tripping all over itself, trying to hook kids (especially with those hard light weapons) and fans of the old show. It failed in both regards. The design for Voltron himself was "meh" at best, it looked like Derrick J. Wyatt designed it.
Now I look at this trailer and this design. And I have to be honest, it looks really legit. Voltron's design reminds of Super Robo designs from the 90's, which fascinates me personally, so I welcome it with both arms. Animation looks great, definite improvement.
All in all, I can't wait to see this.

- The look and feel of the show is The Legend of Korra + Giant Robots and mixed with sausage fest
- Lance is DEFINITELY Sokka
- Pidge looks, acts, and talks too girly for a boy he'd be mistaken for a trap and guys onto him wouldn't mind, seriously!
- Plenty of anime and other cartoon cameos if you can spot them
- Sucks it has no theme song and soundtrack could be better (the only flaw I can see so far)
- Some dialogue could use some work
I'd give it an 8/10 for the pilot. Watching the rest now.

My biggest gripe so far is how much time sometimes passes between transitions. Like they're fighting Sendak and end up trapping him behind a force field. And then it transitions to some time later, taking place in the same room, and that force field is now gone... yet they don't tell us how or where they moved Sendak. Like, I know I'll find out next episode, but it was just sort of jarring when one second he's there, and then less than a minute later he's gone without explanation.

Yes, the show is pretty fast paced. Things happen near constantly, and there's little down time. As soon as the first three pilots are introduced, things start exploding. Why do they keep calling them lions when they have no manes? Wouldn't they be closer to tigers? Or are they female lions considering they have no manes and hunt in packs?
I realise it's adapted from Golion, it just appears to be weird to call them lions when, presuming they're supposed to he male considering the audience and pilots, they have no mane, which is synonymous with a male lion and perhaps the single biggest defining part of one.
