I just saw the FSS movie and thought it was stunning. Animation and music were basically 80s anime in its prime, and the KOG's reveal blew my mind. If it were a bit longer with more mecha action it would have been right up there with DYRL for me.

Why did Nagano dislike it again?
>>
Because he's a narcissistic asshole with gender dysphoria issues.
>>
>>14320115
Yeah but he has the same bass-synth as the bassist from Sigue Sigue Sputnik. That's gotta count in his favor.
>>
Nagano didn't hate the movie. He liked it, but wished that the staff had asked him for his input. He also preferred it to have something other than the classical music since he himself was a fan of 80s experimental rock music. He said all of this back in Baycon 89.

I have no idea where the "Nagano hates the FSS movie" came from, but considering how many times people claim "Nagano hates XXX", I'm sure this rumor popped up the same way.

>>14320137
Man, the FSS soundtrack is one of the best anime soundtracks I've heard.

Do you have a transcript of the things he said at that con?
>>
>>14320137
Wait, why do people say Nagano hates porn (or moonshine?)

You're not allowed to talk about music.

I wish. It was back in the days of Heika.net and some old google groups discussion boards, both of which are dead right now. The only fragment I've even heard of it anymore was this overly long podcast featuring a guy who attended there and told what he remembered:

http://www.awopodcast.com/2009/02/anime-world-order-show-77b-please-dont.html

I do have scans of the book Nagano made when he took that trip to San Fran for that convention though. It's very interesting, to say the least. Here he is with Toren Smith.

Even if that is the case how come there was never a sequel for the movie? The lack of one is probably the reason why everyone is blaming Nagano.

Where is the sequel to Nausicaa? Or Akira? Or Gunm? Exactly.

The 80s were a time when a bunch of one-shot OVAs and movies were made that were adaptations of the manga that didn't even begin to cover half the plot, and only existed really to advertise the manga. FSS was even lower than that- the "movie" wasn't even a movie- it was done for an OVA format but was a theatrical release because it was double featured with another short OVA movie. So not seeing a sequel makes perfect sense.

Also, Nagano had absolutely NO say on whether an FSS movie was to be made or not, including any sequels. Back then FSS was still young and the people who controlled it were Kadokawa, not Nagano.

>>14320279

Well in the case of Akira it was directed by the mangaka (since he was primarily a film director), and while the manga was more or less finished when he started the movie's production, the reality is he didn't want to try and tell the whole story, he just wanted a good self-contained plot that made it a perfectly good substitute to reading the manga.
>>
>>14320171
Sigue Sigue Sputnik invented the future.
>>
>>14320491
>since he was primarily a film director
Akira was his first film.
>while the manga was more or less finished when he started the movie's production
The manga finished two years after the movie was released. The first trailer for the movie was released in 1987, so the the movie's production predates the manga's ending by at least three years and was most like started about four or five years before the manga was completed.

Nausicaa was a pretty big deal though. Without it Ghibli would have never existed.
>>
>>14320279
>Back then FSS was still young and the people who controlled it were Kadokawa, not Nagano
really wish this had continued to be the case, would have prevented GothicMade from being a thing
>>

Anime not gettign a sequel happens all the time. One of the things I hate about this industry.
>>
>>14320180
>both of which are dead right now.
You should be able to find them on the internet archive.

I don't have enough specifics to search or would.
>>
>>14320596

I dunno man, then you get into the eternal unanswerable question: If FSS had been under corporate control would it have ended up being FSS at all?

See also; Gundam.
>>
>>14320569
Nausicaa itself was not a big deal until it was actually successful in theaters. Nausicaa was only made as an anime because the bigwigs at Tokuma wanted to make an anime based on a manga. Miyazaki didn't even want to make an anime version of Nausicaa because he never intended for his manga to be animated, but he had no choice because it was the only thing he was allowed to direct at that point.

The thing that separates FSS from Gundam and many other franchises is that FSS is quintessentially 100% Nagano (L-Gaim aside), whereas Gundam has always been a collaboration of different people, even from the beginning with 0079. Nagano draws all the characters, mecha, setting, writes the story, and basically manages everything by himself. There would be no way to commercialize such a franchise unless you yank it out of the original creator's hands, and even then, you wouldn't be able to reproduce it. Gundam and Macross are successful in staying alive because they've always been collaborative franchises, even if their figureheads (Tomino and Kawamori) exert a strong influence. The same can't be said about FSS.

See I disagree with him there because I don't think 80s rock would fit the tone of the movie.

Nagano's FSS concept albums are some hella trippy stuff.

The general rule of thumb is that no author will ever like their work getting a movie or TV adaptation unless they get a shitload of money from it.

This is pretty nice.

>The thing that separates FSS from Gundam and many other franchises is that FSS is quintessentially 100% Nagano

Then why didn't Nagano direct the FSS movie himself, like so many mangaka before him?
>>
>>14320106
All artist hate their old stuff
>>
>>14327771
Because not all mangaka want their anime to be made as movies in the first place. I'm almost certain the movie wasn't made with his blessing in the first place since he had literally no involvement in it, not did Sunrise let him have any involvement in it.

>>14324658
80s rock goes with all good things. It is the sound of adventure and wonderment.

Is it too much to ask for a full animated adaptation of FSS? The recent Jojo's TV series blows away the old 80s OVAs, so a new FSS show should do the same.

There is, Toshio Suzuki.

If it weren't for him, Miyazaki would have made some dumb movie about a caterpillar instead of Princess Mononoke.
