In SDF-1 Macross the VF-1 went through buldings and the cockpit glass wasn't damaged.

Would anyone actually want this to not be a death? It'd be such a pussy move and severely cheapen any drama the show wants to portray because of it. It would also undercut Hayate's character (Mirage too really), since he needs Messer gone, given the guy is his safety net. With him gone, he has to step up to face Keith since the squad is fucked without a top ace. With him back in action, it neuters Keith and puts that net back in place, removing the need for Hayate to get better.
Pretty sure body modification was considered illegal after the Galaxy incident

Messer became a lot more likeable in the last couple of episodes, but his existence as THE ace of the squad holds Mirage and Hayate back and he has to die or be removed from the picture for the two of them to pull their socks up and develop.
It sucks that it had to happen, but it's been pretty obvious from day one that pineapple hair was going to get pine salad.

What is innovative about the YF-24 derivatives is that they can maintain ECA throughout all modes. It is still an energy issue which is why PPB in the VF-25 still needed an armor pack to power it in other modes.
The VF-31 was certainly getting excess fold energy from the resonance problem is it wasn't programmed to have PPB in fighter mode without a pack. Yes a techincal oversight.
