Unless Macrossverse's medical tech is garbage there's no way that was certainly a lethal wound. He literally walked out of his cockpit, walked all the way to his room to grab a guitar, walked to Claudia's room, and then waited for God knows how long for her to get there, and then he serenaded her. It's not like he was far from help either.

In the novel she spends half the penultimate book duking it out with Frontal/Sinanju of all people. What initially begins as an equal fight, quickly turns into a trouncing of her life.
Once her suit is properly dismembered and busted, FF moves in for the kill, but alas - she experiences an epiphany, that there are people out there who care about her and she absolutely refuses to die.
She parries what was supposed to be the finishing blow, and armed with just a beam saber, gets a second wind, ending in her actually MacGuyvering a resounding win - Sending Frontal running away for dear life in a half-melted, exploded husk of a Mobile Suit.
As she retreats back towards Nahel Argama, by chance she ends up just in the right place for her take a split-second decision to intercept and tank a shot for it, when Riddhe finally gets fed up with Mineva's bullshit and decides to introduce her to a business end of particle rifle for "Denying him".
And action she regrets happened, but is satisfied that it made a difference.
>Fast forward to the OVA.
Gone is the chain of CMOA's and she relapses back to her whore days, and just sits there and takes it - just like Madame taught her.

To this day i scratch my head at this shit - during the Initial run of the OVA - i was sure that Zeong is being introduced to prevent Frontal becoming a non-factor in the finale.
He put some fight in hand-to-hand - but once battle escalated to MS, he was ROFLstomped in seconds, due to Marida PWNing him earlier.

This guy right here, though it requires a little context to understand, as the actual execution of his death was okay, if not the greatest.
The problem was that the CBF had held him at gunpoint several times before his actual death, with Sara swearing she'd kill him for like 3 minutes in each encounter, giving him ample time to escape every time, making both sides look incompetent. Also, by this point in the show, he was becoming less and less effective, and he was always hard to take seriously as a character from his very first appearance (with him saying nothing but about how he wanted to become a god and such; the man's voiced by Wakamoto), so by the time he actually did die, all I did was roll my eyes and feel relief that this plot point was over with.

It's called 辻斬り pronounced 'tsujigiri' which means crossroad killing, basically some Samurai when they got a brand new sword or had finished training some new technique/style. In their eagerness to test it out which just wait by a crossroad and randomly kill the next person who came by in the night.
You see it referenced in a lot of stuff. One really obvious one is if you ever played Pokemon there is the move Night Slash. The original name for that move is actually just 'Tsujigiri' in kana.
Armageddon Musashi had a pretty dumb death.

This is probably one of the best explanations of the Japanese Melodramatic Tradition and it goes a long way toward explaining why character deaths like this happen all the time.

Kshatriya was far less damaged after her fight with Unicorn in the books.
Also, Purustitute turned into a hot-blooded tykebomb back when they shoved her into Banshee's cockpit.
Her completing her face-heel turn later on, merely reinforced it.
Being powered by da powar of friendship was par for the course, if cliche.
Her rekting of Frontal was less related to shouting the loudest and more with her doing the opposite and starting fighting smart and well - dirty.
She abused his over confidence and cockyness and when she saw an opening - went for the jugular.
Stabbing at him with remote controlled, severed "wings" of Ksha', when he was busy sword fighting her.
Once the 1st one stabbed him in the back and nearly "Zeta'ed" him, exploded taking the main verniers with it - he was done. The 2nd destroyed his shield, and before he could react, the third tore it's arm and I think, leg off, wrecked most of the remaining thrusters and blown apart it's chest armor - if I remember correctly, it's been a while since I read moonrunes and BakaTsuki haven't translated up to his reappearance yet.

To be frank, the highlight was the fist/pipe/gun fight.
Author compared the one sided Mecha fight that followed to an "exorcism".
They made a pose, shot him simultaneously, and Banana vaporized him with his huge, supercharged beam saber - while proclaiming him " to have no soul"
The robo-rumble against him was never supposed to be a mecha highlight of the finale - that was simultaneous the Unicorn vs Banshee and Sinanju vs Kshatriya fights.

We can only guess.
But the Director clearly wanted an EPIC, animesque ending with SPACE MAGIC and a grand MS battle, and apparently didn't think that a melee final fight with a short mecha finisher would satisfy the viewers.
So they spared him getting injured and having his suit ruined by Puru, and even gave him Neo Zeong so he wouldn't get his ass comically gaped by Banana and Blue Balls combo.
Too bad that by elevating Frontal, they neutered some of the best parts of the final two books, like the aforementioned Kshatriya vs. Sinanju and Pic Related - which, I think was a great callback to the finale of MSG, but more savage, with 100% more steel pipes instead of faggy rapiers.
