Are Panzers /m/?

What did you all think of the movie?
>>
>>14312229

Is there any point to this show? As far as I know, the girls are just high school lolis who play tank games as a past time. There's no urgency to the plot, and nothing happens. They might as well play baseball.
>>
>>14312244

Because tank battles are exciting to watch and provide a better alternative to mind-numbing baseball drivel.

Also there's plenty enough urgency, at least in the actual tourney itself, because it turns they're kind of sort of fighting to keep their school running.

Well you don't, because you didn't watch the show.

The show and movie follows a "win at tanks and save the school" plot.

Besides, it's like you've never watched a sports anime.

Yes it does. If it's not about anything you're just watching people run in circles. I want to get involved in the plot, setting and universe. A glorified sports anime isn't going to have much emotional impact for me.

Have you never seen a sports movie? They play to save their school, their home, from shutting down. It works because you get attatched to the characters. They're not deep, but they're likable. It's all about friendship and teamwork and sportsmanship. It's remarkably sincere which is why I love it.

>>14312265

Not him, but I also haven't watched it yet and that's a little bullshit. You don't destroy an entire town just because a school team loses or even because the school is gone. That'd be like destroying Townsville, Alabama because they lost at basketball or something. Its pure idiocy. I haven't watched much sports anime, but to use a relevant example, I liked GBF because Sei's ultimate goal was both personal and realistic, to surpass his dad because his dad was cool. There was no big conspiracy to make a given guy lose or shut down his school, no leaps in logic lime an entire town being wiped outing he lost - just him not living up to a standard.

The crazy came later in a guy looking to rig the results out a paranoia about meeting a guy who neither knows nor cares about him.

Is the plot here as dumb as it sounds?

Note: I'm not saying the show is bad because it has such a plot, because action, characters and so on can absolutely make up for a cliché or silly plot hook - a story can even rise above such clichés. Star Wars being a well known example if rising above cliché. I'm just asking if the plot hook is as bad as it comes across in that pic.

>>
>>14312685
The school was the town. The school had no funding and needed something to attract students. Being known as the senshado champions brings prestige to the school and hence cash. It requires a few stretches in logic, but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for it. What's important is that it creates drama. Miho has the weight of the school on her shoulders in the tournament, and she also has to live up to her family name.

> What keeps it afloat?

Buoyancy. It's not even a stretch. Nature has floating islands over 10 miles long that have no support and just float because they're buoyant. An artificial one that's smaller is fine.
>>
>>14312847

please, please stop trying to justify this horseshit. Just say it's magic and be done with it.
>>
>>14312853

You not liking something doesn't make it horseshit anon. It's engine might be horseshit, but it floating absolutely isn't. It's not like there aren't man made floating islands miles long and weighing thousands of tonnes in reality. They don't move, but they do float. And that's all I was addressing since it was a separate question.
>>
>>14312778
You could get a decent sized town with the space available on a Nimitz, I'd argue. Hell the population density could turn out comparable to that of a city's for all I know.

I mean, by the nature of their mission an aircraft carrier, especially a Nimitz-class USN supercarrier, you're looking at a mobile airport staffed with the personnel needed to coordinate traffic, serve as the traffic, maintain the traffic, maintain the personnel, and so on and so forth. It's essentially a small town on the sea, up to and including an on-board convenience store.

6500 people on board. Someone can crunch the numbers. And that's just for the carrier, if you expand to include the whole carrier strike group things might get a bit more interesting (or cramped).
>>
>>14312760
Its the carrier that is costly, not the town.

Funding the operation of carriers of that size is not something any town can do.
As of now we know that GuP!Japan has 18 school carriers, assuming they are funded by the country, the town need to be able to put out at least 1/18 of the national budget allocated to keeping the carriers running if they want keep the carrier running by themselves.

Look at the cost of running our more appropriately sized carriers.
>it cost $7 million per day to operate the newest class of US Aircraft Carriers, the Gerald R. Ford Class
Look at the size of those monsters.
>>
>>14312911

Towns don't fund themselves in reality either. They get government subsidy and help on plenty of things and fund what they can themselves. If the government isn't willing or able to fund the costs then they become dilapidated, not scrapped.

People would still have the choice to live there though. And colleges are much different to high schools in both size and community importance. Even if something vital to a town's identity is gone the town remains and some, though not many recover by gaining a new identity.

The rest, people have a choice to stay or leave at their decision, which is a big one, since it often means breaking ties with a lot of stuff and uprooting lives they've spent time building. Putting that decision on a school competition's results is bad drama in my opinion, and you're better off putting something reasonable upon them instead, since the town thing is very unlikely to be explored anyways.

They actually went with the scrapping plans early on in the TV series.

Then they negotiated to a verbal agreement that if they won the high school championship(In the sport that the nation is working towards getting good at because world championship soon), they won't get the carrier scrapped. They went on to win the championship.

But then the ministry cunt abused the fact that they didn't get that agreement down on paper to do so anyway, and that pissed off not just them, but also the big shots in charge of said sport.
Then the big shots came in and negotiated with them, which led to the match to determine the carrier's fate for real.

I don't think that's taking advantage of it dramatically. I'd consider that more having the actual town involved, what they're doing regarding it, what they think of such an outrageous situation, how they support the girls, whether they try anything else and so on. Which I don't think there's room to properly explore in a show focused on sports instead. Which is why I think it's bad drama.

It's exactly what I expected from the movie. The show, but bigger and more over the top.
In other words, great.

Though there's a few things that I found kinda jarring. The scene where they act like all of Pravda's dying like a real war movie is a bit too cheesy when you know nobody ever gets hurt in those matches, the scene with the bear in the final battle is dumb, and there was no real need to make the bureaucrat guy a goddamn supervillain. But other than that the movie was enjoyable as fuck.
>>
Looking at the stuff about the school carriers in the OVA, they certainly did some thinking and came up with a rather interesting setting.

One thing to note is that the schools are the main point of the carriers, the whole carrier is a "school" in a way.
>School carriers are used to foster a sense of independence among the students
>Crewed entirely by students from the naval studies, the crew don't have to pay their school fees
>There is a long history of the use of school carriers(or ships similar in concept), even back to roman times, in their world
>The first school carrier as they know it was privately funded, and the students from it performed exceptionally well
>After that they started shitting out school carriers
>The construction of the carriers also helped the heavy industries
>Multiple sources of power apart from the propulsion
>Farms and water purification on the lower levels
>Town is on the surface because its agreed to be not a good idea to not see the sky for an extended period of time

>Ooarai's carrier has 30000 people living on it, large carriers can have up to 100000 people

As someone who hasn't watch the show, but knows a little about tanks, how are tanks like the Type 89 useful? I see it is in the show, but it's alongside Tigers and Churchills

Can it penetrate any of the enemy tanks or does it have a PLOT gun?

But /k/ says tanks are invincible super weapons that can dodge missiles!
>>
>>14315784
Tanks in GuP use special modern armor and I think the shells are weaker than historically used too. It is a sport after all - you don't fence with sharp swords. So shooting at each other is almost 100% safe.

When the tank takes an impact that would have penetrated its historical armor, a flag pops out and the tank counts as being taken out of the fight.

And yes, I realize that even with this setup accidents still may happen. But this isn't this kind of show.
>>
>>14316072

There's also a side page in the manga that explains that the shells have sensors in the front that detect human silhouettes and steer the shells away from those, so that even if you aimed the cannon directly at a girl, the shell itself would swerve away and miss.

That's the reasoning given for the Nishizumi style of commanding of almost always being outside the commander's hatch such that any shots towards the turret will veer away from the commander's silhouette.

The shell will steel steer towards the hull, I assume. As long as you don't pull Grendizer manga-style human armor, having the commander peeking outside won't save your tank from getting shot.

>>14316617
The armor absorbs the shell's whole kinetic energy, I don't think there's much shrapnel to speak of.

Projectile fragments?

The only kills that the Type 89 gets are a few CV-33s. Other than that, it serves the crucial role of making idiot commanders send half their forces chasing after it instead of the actual threatening tanks.
>>
>>14316654
I think a bit of official art showed him as a tank mechanic.

In some sort of card set iirc.
>>
>>14315436
At one point in the series, the Type 89 hits a Matilda in the rear at point blank range and barely scratches its paint. It's mainly used as a decoy or for performing recon.
>>
Wait, wait wait

So the ENTIRE show takes place in cities on boats at sea?

Does the fact that they're on the fucking ocean ever impact anything? Weather, waves, the fact that they would be rocking back and forth constantly?

The deeper I delve into this show the dumber it gets?
>>
>>14316988
Wrong, I know for a fact the St Gloria vs Oarai, Oarai vs Pravda and Oarai vs that one US team all happened on mainland.
>>
>>14317021

The logistics on these things blows my mind. There's no towers on these things. How do they navigate? Do they have radar? They'd have to have like 500,000 people just to crew these things.

In show why do these things even exist?
>>
>>14317057
Because this way all the international schools can travel to Japan to compete in tank battles. Also it encourages independence in the school girls. Also because you're on /m/ who cares about physics. Gurls und Panzer knows it's not realistic and it wears it like a badge of honour.

The only time they have a match on the ship itself was the first practice match between the Oarai teams in Episode 3.
>>

I want some grounding. I could accept little girls driving tanks. I can accept them doing tank combat competitions. I can't accept these 25 km long super carriers cities.

>blast doors
Blowout panels.
Pretty much every tank with an ammo compartment isolated from the crew still has main gun rounds stored in the hull.
On top of that there is more inside of a tank than just ammunition that will start a fire: Fuel, engine oil, hydraulics oil and so on.

Those are just towns at best.

The entire point of the carrier is the education part of it, which is why, as mentioned, the carrier is crewed by students in the naval studies classes. The town on the surface is just to provide a relatively normal everyday life for the people living on it.

So why is transporting fucking islands (also lol that thing is nearly a kilometer vertical and displaces practically nothing compared to its size) smarter than just flying or shipping your tanks to different countries like normal people? Is this convenience for a single sport important enough to justify these multi-multi-multi-billion dollar superstructures and construction of entire towns?

The world is ending due to global warning causing rising sea levels. The schools are literally arks and they hold competitions to decide who gets to stay on the ships and who stay behind on land (and will die). War is done by women for future re-population (Obviously they only want the genes of the strongest as they're more like to survive in 'Waterworld'-esqe post apocalyptic world). Also Miho is actually a boy chosen to breed with fellow students.

>>14315614
Historically, the Type 89 apparently had a rather robust suspension or something which gave it an off-road speed that was pretty close to its road speed. It was just dangerous to drive at that speed while offroad so they don't do it.

In GuP, it led to the crew GUTSing their way forward, driving at maximum speed regardless of terrain.
In fact, they GUTS'd so hard, they are actually one of the most skilled crew they have, they land a lot of on-the-move shots, its just the tank holding them back. When they can actually hurt the enemy, they are pretty damn dangerous.

More like questions about something idiotic. The ships are dumb and I agree with other people. Girls fighting in magic risk-free tanks is easily suspended, those ships break disbelief.
>>
>>14318168

Are you implying my explanation was somehow inaccurate?
>>
>>14318187
Why would an academy need to travel across the seas so much?

If I were to nitpick even more, there could only be one or two ports in the world that could handle those ships and I'm surprised these behemoths don't get caught in the sand in anything other than blue water. The wind, against the large one especially, would be something to fear. I'm really concerned about damage to the hull, too, and maintenance would take forever.

That's actually one of the points of the carriers; it's a big reminder by the staff that the viewer shouldn't take this show seriously. Among other things, we have a team of hikkis who can't manage a sit-up turn SWOLE enough in a few days that they can toss and catch 75mm shells with one arm.

In-universe, they're nation-sponsored schools that happened to have tankery as one of their sports clubs (yes, every ship is basically filled with Britaboos, Russiaboos, Ameriboos, etc.). Ooarai is a fluke in that no foreign nation sponsors it, its tank club has been shut down for decades and it's done nothing of note in other fields either, leaving it vulnerable to bureaucratic budget-trimming.

Also, Saunders doesn't even need to sail to wherever, they can just LAPES their tanks with their Super Galaxies.

>smarter than just flying or shipping your tanks to different countries like normal people?
All the schools we see in GuP as of now are all actually japanese schools.

It actually depends on where they are going, I think.
Sometimes they ride a smaller boat to the location from the carrier, sometimes if the location they are going have a specialised dock(Of course you need a specialised dock for these monsters. Each school carrier has their own docks, and those docks are shared by all the carriers depending on the situation), they'll sail there and also let the population on board get off the ship to relax and whatnot.
Or you're rich as fuck(Or government official), you just airdrop your tanks with a fucking plane.

Refer to >>14314380 to know about what we already know about the carriers.
>>
>>14318212
But I don't take it seriously, my autism only flares for specific things like this. I'm 100% fine with the rest of the show, but the ships bother me.

And I get that they're schools but is there any reason besides "it's cool" for the ships?
>>
>>14318243
>>14318237
Ah, just read the other post. Retarded but cool, just how I like it. And yet we know of no other countries who own a schoolship?
>>
>>14318251
>And yet we know of no other countries who own a schoolship?
Its assume that other countries has them as well.

They mentioned the brits(the real brits in their universe) building the first modern school carrier in the OVA, and mentioned an unnamed school carrier with 400 years of history.

The school carriers are serious business in GuP and has a long history.
>>
>>14312640
According to the /a/ threads it's a kind of mock round. Its rigged to have a big visual effect but far less destructive force.
>>
>>14318251
There are presumably schools in other parts of the world. The booklets that came with the BD's mentions that modern schoolships started with the British converting the HMS Dreadnought into one, but the really big ones weren't a thing until mid-century.

Speaking of autism, here's something that might flare it up even more: one of the French schools is a giant Surcouf. Also something something about their wine aging better at depth.
>>
>>14318263
Cool. If those are Japan's carriers, I'd love to see what the US has for supercarriers. Do they support skyscrapers? A student city that dwarfs the rest of the towns? A 51st state or province, even? And the older Brit carrier sounds cool.
>>
>>14318282

>Also something something about their wine aging better at depth.
I've heard dumber shit said about wine before so that's actually not a problem.

>>14318289
Now that you mention it, it sounds pretty cool. I like the 20-30 story style skyscrapers a bit more than the 60ish story style ones though. A floating/flying skyscraper city would be cool too.
>>
>>14317067
Those other schools in the tv series aren't international schools. They're all Japanese schools. Each is just themed after another country. That's why they are so hilariously stereotypical.
