I'm new to /m/, Star Trek is allowed here? fuck, i wish i knew this years ago.

DS9 is my favourite series by far. I wish there was some kind of follow up to it with what happened to everyone.
>>
>>14310771
dunno which books you're talking about exactly, but I remember a stitch in time being pretty good (it's not time travel), it's about garak being on cardassia after the war assisting in rebuilding and he recounts flashbacks to his days training for the obsidian order in letters he writes to bashir. of course it's mainly good reading if you liked garak, it's more insight into his past and personality. it was actually written by the actor who played garak.

>>
>>14310754
There's actually a decent reason for wanting it on Blu Ray.

Because of the quality cap, you will have space to can cram more episodes per disc. The whole series would take much less shelf space than on DVD or, even worse, VHS.
>>
>>14314658
>implying they wouldn't just upscale it and sell some shit repackage with just as many discs

in a more optimistic vein iirc they found the data for the ship models, and it's at least theoretically possible to rerender the ship fights in HD format

Oh thank god they finally learned. Though considering how they bombed ENT they were unlikely but still.

At least we won't be getting starfleet genociding people they promised to help because they changed their minds then
episodes later call others monsters when on the reciving end of that shit and get told no right out the box.

How did we go from stuff like "In the pale moonlight" to shit like "Dear Doctor" or that episode with tucker being raped by an alien and played for laughs.

There's no copies of the Podunk Times where the episode where Uhura and Kirk kiss with a different show listed that day. That pretty much sums it up for me. I enjoy the early seasons for being laid back and just putting the characters in typical Star Trek situations instead of the more intense/plot heavy later seasons. To me, DS9 has a perfect mix of the two styles.
>>
>>14320321
>We're never gonna get a series set post Voyager are we?
Well, since it's been so long, I'm sure that anyone in a position to have their finger on the button to greenlight a new Trek series will want as much of the old staples in it as possible in order to have maximum appeal to people only vaguely familiar with Star Trek. Post-Voyager isn't very conducive to this.

Think about it. After DS9 and Voyager, the Klingons are allies again, the Romulans are at least not fully enemies anymore (especially after Nemesis), the Dominion is beaten, the Cardassians owe the Federation quite a debt for helping free them from the Dominion. The Borg are neutered and probably decimated as well. They've pretty much written themselves into a corner where the only way forward is to either undo a lot of what earlier series have done just so they can have conflict (which will piss off old fans), or creating entirely new threats (which won't satisfy executives, and will probably also piss off old fans).

I also remember that I thought the finale kinda sucked, even the first time I saw it as an early teen when it aired.

Pretty much ever story beat it hit was either so predictable it was boring, or so nonsensical it was boring.

The resolution to the Dominion War was terrible. They fight their way to Cardassia, then Odo links with that changeling leading them and they just surrender. Why, exactly? Because Odo knows a few solids who aren't bad people (and a lot of solids that are), and that was enough to convince her? They didn't make it seem like she was just surrendering to get the cure.

And don't even get me started on the Dukat gets superpowers and Sisko tackles him off a cliff into a pit of fire to save the day for the Prophets. The Bajoran religious stuff had too much screentime as it was. Even the producers could see that. Yet the ending of the show features that just as heavily as the Dominion War arc they'd been building to since early in season 2. That was just a slap in the face.

I mean, all in all I love DS9, but I really didn't care for the ending at all. Only "These Are the Voyages" from Enterprise can surpass it in terms of being a disappointing finale. Even "Endgame" wasn't as disappointing, since at least it was more consistent with being on par with Voyager's average quality level.
>>
>>14324375
But she surrendered because she lost the war and was facing a firing squad.

>>14321170
That's because she only got one season when they were wrapping up the series and all the plot lines. Her initial episodes of finding her identity and getting crushed by Garek were good. But everything afterwards was trash since they just used her to get the memories of her old hosts for a murder mystery, the god awful one with her family, then shipping her with Worf for a bit before they at least gave her a good end with Bashir. She was still better than Jadzia who was just another action girl when you already had Kira for that.

>>14324375
I think because after Odo linked with the Female Changling, she got his memories to find out that while the Federation was behind the reason the Great Link was dying, it was people in the Federation that risked everything to cure Odo and then allowed him to cure the other Changlings. It was an act of mercy they probably never encountered. Being held at gunpoint didn't phase her, she said she'd make sure Cardassia Prime burned to the ground and the loses of life to the alliance fleet to wipe out the Dominion forces would ensure that any victory would be a phyyric one.

As for the prophets. Dukat got in league with the enemies of the wormhole aliens, and seeing as Sisko and Dukat always had an antagonistic relationship, it was fitting that they'd be used in a greater war between these aliens. Was it rushed and leave things unsatisfactory with Sisko and Dukat just vanishing? Absolutely. But was it necessary? Yes.

Seeing as Jadzia got 6 of the 7 seasons to have her character fleshed out and the only real developments she had was cleaning up the messes of her former host, Curzon, friend zoning Bashir and then marrying Worf. I disagree.

It also doesn't help your case that Jadzia reverts to a scared little girl since the trill was the source of her confidence and resolve in the one episode it was removed from her.

Wow character development and personal flaws which they have to either deal with or overcome, it's almost like that's the mark of a great character or something.

I believe noted pedo, Aatrek, created that gif.

DS9 has a very high average, not too many bad episodes.
Season 1 had to set things up and find its footing, so that helps ya look the other way for some of the subpar episodes, but Profit and Lace in season 6 is one of the worst Trek episodes period.

I would say it's as good as TNG but TNG can be really up and down in quality.
>>
>>14325484
>but Profit and Lace in season 6 is one of the worst Trek episodes period.
Yeah, I love DS9 but I absolutely hate that episode. Really terrible. Not even Armin Shimerman could save that episode.
>>
>>14325488
Armin Shimerman really carries the day for the Ferengi episodes, which I forgot to mention about, people tend to love or hate em. Without him everyone would hate em.

>Wow character development and personal flaws which they have to either deal with or overcome
But she didn't overcome them or learn to deal with them, it was only resolved when Sisko saved the day and got the trill back for Jadzia. Outside of learning more about Trills, it did nothing but weaken Jadzia as a character since all the confidence came from the slug, not the person..

Ezri on the other hand had to go through an actual trial of character because she didn't want to be joined, but had to since she was the only trill on board and had to adjust to her new memories and the idea she had to live up the legacies of her predecessors which caused her to originally give up before coming to terms with her situation and pressing onward.

At least it's not worse than Threshold. As for Armin, he was one of the original Ferengis in TNG and because of how they were told how to act, the Ferengi were seen as a laughing stock by the fans as opposed to some giant threat Roddenberry originally envisioned. Everything after that for Armin was like penitence for the Ferengi reputation.
>>
>>14325517
>But she didn't overcome them or learn to deal with them
Except that was resolved later in the series when Dax found out the truth behind Curzon rejecting her the first time through her trial and she was able to regain confidence in her own personality/abilities. Try again!
>>
>>14318466

You know, Sisko is one charismatic dude. I felt like it took a while for him to get a little grounded in a actual "character", rather than "My wife is dead and that kind of sucks.", but seeing him evolve over the course of the series and develop with everyone around him.

That is the true gift and greatness of DS9. The evolution of the cast.
>>
>>14325537
He only rejected her because he had the hots for her. Not because of what he perceived as personality deficiencies.
>>
>>14325525
I haven't watched Voyager since it aired and not likely to rewatch, but I did forget about Threshold's badness.

Shimerman's DS9 interview covered alot of that stuff, I've always liked Quark and Odo's relationship in the show and the interview covered how well their actors got along.
>>
>>14325556
The cast is 10/10. It also helped that they had a lot of really great non-Starfleet, non-human characters to the setting seem more fleshed out.

>>14325557
She didn't know that.
>>
>>14325484
Overall DS9 stays pretty consistent with one or two exception.
And aside from Profit and Lace, DS9s worst episodes still aren't as bad as TNG's worst.
>>
>>14324987
Spoon Heads has long been the traditional slur of choice against Cardassians.
>>
Just started TNG, first episode is pretty good. Not a fan of the "virus" in the second one, have seen this plot device a bit too many times. I am liking Data.
>>
>>14325621
First season is its own style, most people will say it's weak but I say it has a good number of strong episodes despite some obviously bad ones. But definitely very different stylistically. Series peaks at seasons 3 and 4 IMO. But it remains strong throughout every season.
>>
>>14325576
But she didn't change the way she acted before she was joined in order to be accepted and it didn't change her afterwards. If anything it was Curzon who had to accept how things were and come clean in the end.

>>14325569
By nature Quark and Odo's relationship were adversarial and antagonistic because Quark was always involved in shady business practices to make money and Odo was man of law and order. What made it work was the fact that they were flexible in how they operated since while Odo wanted Quark imprisoned multiple times, it was better to keep tabs on him because he'd be able to ensnare the bigger fish involved. But in a way there was a mutual respect between them because they were both extremely good at what they did and the fact they were interacting withe each other for so long. And on an odd level they did care about each other's well being. Like when Quark helped Odo finally confess to Kira.

>>14325627
>>14325621
The first season of the TNG might as well be a redressing of ToS because a lot of the scripts were taken from canceled sequel, Star Trek Phase II and retooled. Also the music and heavy handed morality messages are a call back to the ToS. Season 2 is where the cast gets their footing so they aren't just mash ups of characters from the ToS, and Season 3 is where things come to their own.
>>
>>14325627
>>14326021
Season 1 of TNG also has the great Ooga Booga Where da White Wimminz planet episode.

And also male and female crew members wearing dress/tunic uniforms
>>
>>14314658
??? Don't you just rip the DVDs and put them on a HDD or flash drive? No need for shelf space.
>>
>>14320072
I'm pretty sure DS9 is on TPB and KAT along with all the other Star Trek series.
>>
>>14321621
Just ignore /pol, the rest of the world does too. It's why they're always so angry and frustrated.
>>
>>14326085
>the great Ooga Booga Where da White Wimminz planet episode
You know, I've watched this episode and found nothing racist about it. Any race other than black could've played that planet's people and nobody would've batted an eye. The only thing Code of Honor was guilty of was giving a few black TV actors and extras some much-needed work. Yet it seems to be the punchline for TNG season 1 that most of its actors like making jokes about at panel dicussions while idiot trekkies guffaw in agreement.
>>
>>14323709
>undo a lot of what earlier series have done just so they can have conflict
Isn't that what Star Trek Online did with the Klingons?
>>
>>14326239
>You know, I've watched this episode and found nothing racist about it
I'm not one to normally cry racism, but you're straight stupid. It was a ridiculously racist parody of African tribalism.
>>
>>14326270
Everything gets parodied, just because it was based on a African tribalism and other sources doesn't make it racist. If you want to complain about something at least complain about the lack of creativity and looks among the aliens attire.

Everyone but you thought that episode was wildly racist on top of being a terrible episode. Move on.
>>
Does it bother anyone else that they aired Voyager 2 years after DS9 began? Why would they have people flip-flop between 2 Trek series that were running simultaneously in the late 90's? At least DS9's 1st season was TNG's final one.
>>
>>14326395
I dunno, I enjoyed it back in the day when I would turn on the TV and there was three Star Trek series playing.
>>
>>14326395
Is it really that different than someone who watches both Flash and Arrow these days?
>>
>>14326395
Buffy and Angel were on the air at the same time, and even did cross over episodes.
It's not that strange really, I could see how it might be confusing to an outsider at first glance, but if you're dumb enough to confuse Voyager and DS9 then Star Trek wasn't for you anyways.
>>
>>14323709
>The Borg are neutered and probably decimated as well
I will never forgive what Voyager did to the Borg.

>the Dominion is beaten
Barely. They never brought the full might of their forces from the Gamma Quadrant like those 2000 ships the Prophets whisked away. It took the combined might of the Feds, Klingons, and Romulans to even fight on equal terms.

I have a feeling the Abbrams films will depict the Dominion as the enemy. No other faction were as dangerous and sneaky like the Dominion. And unlike the Borg, they were ALWAYS threatening without ever being turned into a joke.
>>
>>14326021
I liked how Quark was actually a decent guy for a Ferengi. During the Bajor Occupation, he sold food and other supplies to the Bajorans for slightly above cost. He could've shaken them down for as much money as he could squeeze, but he was actually compassionate. Even his Bajoran employees were treated better and were paid a strip of latinum compared to the mine laborers. Quark's comment about how the Dominion occupation of DS9 lacked the cries of starving children and brutal treatment by the Cardassian guards sheds light on his ethics.

I felt that DS9 would've had a better conclusion and more budget for the Dominion War scenes if Voyager didn't premier until 1998 or 1999.
>>
>>14326467
Basically, the Prophets showed at the battle to retake DS9 that they would destroy Dominion fleets passing through the wormhole to protect Bajor. That's what cut off the reinforcements from ever coming through. And that would continue indefinitely, meaning at the absolute soonest a fleet could get there in about 80 years or so, give or take, and would have supply lines spread over half the galaxy, because they are denied the use of the wormhole.
>>
>>14326524
Yeah, Quark had a conscience and he hated himself for it. It kept getting in the way of him making money.
>>
>>14326564
I know, but it's still amazing how the Dominion forces within the Alpha Quadrant were still able to give a beating to the alliance. It helped that the Breen joined them and that energy dampening weapon.

It always bothered me that we never saw a glimpse of Picard and the Enterprise-E in the Dominion War besides that stupid diplomatic mission in Insurrection.

>>14326570
The aliens were the best characters in DS9. Quark, Garak, and Martook especially.
