The general sentiment towards it is negative. I liked it a lot; it's very much a "journey not the destination show" in that if you don't enjoy watching them go halfway across the world for 15 episodes or whatever to get back to space then you're not gonna have a good time. I liked the latter half too. To be honest I'm always up for Takahashi mysticism.

I liked Blue Gender. The whole "earth is purging the human cancer" mystical shit was lame, though. It seemed more like a 70s sci-fi novel than a 90s anime to me.

It's pretty sad and also telling that the mere use of the word 'gender' automatically correlates to Tumblr in people's minds now. I can't say I'm any different.
I'm now imagining a Tumblrized version of Blue Gender where all of the characters are now Technicolor-haired, fat-positive racially ambiguous black/brown people with unidentifiable made-up genders and all of the Blue are just replaced with white men.

I wouldn't say the best, the show clearly had problems eg. weak second half, ending went full retard. But it had some good stuff in there that I'm always disappointed no one else had a shot at.
Like with Argevoellen (another show with issues) I saw one reviewer dismiss the main characters as boring because they were competant and in the military... yet people also complain mecha protags are always reluctant teens.
