I haven't had a huge problem with BONES CG based on stuff like the Darker Than Black cars, I'm interested to see the mecha designs if they need CG for them.

I'd rather take 10 IBOs or even 5 Venus Project: Climaxes over the boring-as-hell CG in Argevollen, Kuromukuro, or anything not from Orange, really. Shit just doesn't mesh well with the 2D characters for the most part.

They can use CG for cars, cockpits and mob mecha all they want as long as they keep the main mecha drawn by hand.

Studios seem to go CG because it's supposedly cheaper and/or easier. But that doesn't make sense, right? They still need budget and effort to make it look good either way. So I don't see the point.
If I could choose between awesome CG animation and awesome 2D animation, I'd take the 2D. If I had to choose between shitty CG and shitty 2D, I'd still take the 2D. If I had to choose between awesome CG and shitty 2D then of course I'd take the CG, but it doesn't make that this would ever be the case.

What CG is is CONSISTENT. It maintains scale and shape (for properly rigged mechanical models) at all times unless purposefully morphed. And if you set up an environment it's easy to maintain CORRECT perspective within it, which is why anime movies use CG to mock up complex fight scenes that traverse the environment. The actual cost between 3D and 2D is probably similar. CG animation is actually more tedious for it to look half good because you can't really cheat. 2D you can draw blobs and garbage to convey motion, which is what most in-between frames are and these days a lot of key frames aren't that great either. I doubt a few half-decent CG animators is cheaper than a few dozen Korean and Chinese frame farmers

Bones' Concrete Revolutio occasionally uses CG for the mechas and it's superbly well done. Most people didn't even notice when they used CG because of how much it blended with the show.

Only the chairs the Globe people are sitting on and the satellites holding the parts. The expansion sequence's animation itself doesn't use 3DCG.
