Lance was in Red and Sven was in Blue, yes. This time around its to color match however from the bios and what other interviews have expanded upon Shiro sounds like a walking deathflag.
The website also mentions that Blue Lion is the easiest in accepting new pilots. If they try to go like in '84 then Shiro gets hurt/killed and Keith will have to grow up real fast in taking command. Lance will slide to Red Lion assuming by that point he grows as a character in that the Red Lion will accept him and Allura will go for Blue.

As for referencing Vehicle Voltron, the early 00's Devil's Due comics did a good job of incorporating VV characters and lore into a Voltron reboot. In them, Commander Hawkins (captain of the VV ship) was Keith and co's instructor at the Galaxy Garrison Academy, the Galaxy Alliance and Drule Empire cold war is one of the impetus for the search for Voltron, Zarkon's position in the Drule Empire was clarified (in those comics they were a collection of feudal kingdoms with Zarkon's being one of the more powerful and independent) and later in the run Vehicle Voltron shows up as a GalaxyGarrison project to reverse engineer Voltron and the VV Team and Lion Voltron Team have a ongoing rivalry.
I can only hope this new series has only a fraction of those kinds of references to VV, but I doubt it since VV is the red-headed stepchild of the franchise.
