Realistically the first colonists would have been scientists, engineers, and labor like miners for deep space excavation. After that it would have been people desperate to start a new life with certain colonies being designated penal colonies.
Second generation are usually the ones that hate everything because they're right on the cusp of things being not shit but they're still really shit, but they don't have the experience of how bad things were for the person that left behind their homeland to take a chance on something.
Then the third generation mellows out and the fourth gets pissy about something new, and then the fifth generation turns that thing the fourth was pissy about into the thing that the second generation was pissy about.
