Has anyone actually seen Shirow in the last decade? How do we know he's alive, even?

>But he's still releasing books

What if it's just a super advanced yet heavily outdated computer? That would explain the 90s-tier CG in the artwork. A computer wired to Shirow's deepest desires. Oily black men coated in bad CG and horsecocks.

I just read Dominion and it was nice
>>
It could just be assistants.

Or maybe he uploaded his mind when the earthquake started.
>>
>>14280716
Yeah, "nice" sums up the original Dominion manga nicely.

and HAS ANYONE GOTTEN THEIR HANDS ON DOMINION: PHANTOM OF THE AUDIENCE?
>>
>>14281753
And as always, something went wrong. That's why you shouldn't trust computors. You'll end up banged in the showers by lizard dudes.
>>
>>14281763
"reclusive artist's style changes oddly, after investigating it turns out he died and his cyberuploadhyperbrain didn't upload right" sounds like a decent premise for a b-story in a cyber show.
>>
>>14280716
>What if it's just a super advanced yet heavily outdated computer?
What if we connect him to the internet?

Would he make a doodle made out of oily horsecocks and shut down government sites?

Goddamn cyberpunk really is dystopian.
>>
Was there ever another Japanese manga/anime creator who fall off as hard as Shirow? I think not.
>>
>>14281834
oh yes there were, in fact practically every prominent artist of his generation got JUSTed, it's just that we don't meme them as much.
>>

You think wrong.

I'm not talking about their sales, popularity or relevance. I'm talking about the degradation of their ability and style.
>>
>>14281848
Oh so am I.

Just look at Jouji Manabe. Nowadays you can't tell the difference between his drawings and those of the average doujin artist. And obviously he doesn't give a shit about writing stories anymore.

I'd say what really sets Shirow apart is that his IPs are still massively popular but nobody really gives a shit about him anymore and those who do just feel sorry and a little angry.
He's like the George Lucas of mangakas.

>I'm talking about the degradation of their ability and style.

Anon, to be terribly honest, Shiro's problem is not his ability, in fact he's just as good as ever, it's just that he found some new fetishes. We love to meme on big oily horsecocks here on /m/, but Shiro's actually improved on basic anatomy, problem is he's wasting away drawing lackluster porn while other people from his generation, like Hagiwara, actally draw something more than lackluster porn.

Hell, Hagiwara is like, the laziest from his generation and still gets a lot of shit done, just not for Bastard!!, unfortunately, and his style is immensely better now even though he can be accused of liking gorilla macho musclegirls too much just as Shiro like his oily horsecocks. But hey, at least he's still based, just look at the guy.

Shiro's problem is that he just let it all go and his current fetishes are worse than his previous ones.
Also, Togashi.
>>
>>14281859
>Just look at Jouji Manabe
No. Nowhere close to how bad modern Shirow is.

Fuck off, fanboy.
>>
>>14281860
>shirow's actually improved on basic anatomy
I disagree
I'd say he's improved in some minute details of anatomy, at the expense of the big picture. His previous characters may not have had every muscle drawn right but at least they didn't look like stick insects masquerading as humans.

It's a typical case of style degenerating into mannerism.
>>
>>14281867
Hey, I said BASIC anatomy.

I agree with you that his girls look like toothpicks now, but that's simply style, as I said, new fetishes.
>>
>>14281870
and that's exactly where I'm disagreeing with you; basic anatomy would be the main muscle groups and the overall proportions of the human body.
He's largely lost track of that in favor of NON-BASIC anatomy such as the degree of elasticity of a butt cheek as it's being plowed by a horsecock.
>>
>>14281871
>He's largely lost track of that in favor of NON-BASIC anatomy such as the degree of elasticity of a butt cheek as it's being plowed by a horsecock.

I disagree, it's PRECISELY because the buttcheeks are so skinny now that they've lost elasticity, it makes sense.

I stand on my previous point regarding fetishes not infringing basic anatomy rules.

Masamune Shirow was just a pseudonym. A pseudonym used by multiple mangaka of the Eighties, none of whom ever met each other.

Into the Nineties and Aughts, more writers would take on the Shirow name. Nobody knows who the original Shirow was, nor if there even was an original.

Masamune Shirow is a standalone complex.

In Conflict we know that Anna is shaping up to become Leona's gunner while Uni is gonna be doing paperwork (or is it the other way around?).

But there's a few earlier drawings in which they look a bit different, like here >>14280716

2 fun anime adaptions. Appleseed had an OVA made at the perfect time and somehow it came out bland as fuck. GitS continues to get anime that are nothing like the manga.

I guess Black Magic fans have it good too, don't they? It doesn't have the space plot but it's still great fun. Heck, I think it's better that it doesn't since the space stuff wasn't explored that well.

the new manga's looking decent, but not particularly promising since it doesn't have Shirow's style or a cool protagonist. It could go either way at this point.

He can afford it, besides, he's one of the few old mangaka from the 80's that didn't disappear and/or almost stopped drawing, Utatane's last work was the Evangelion: Anima designs spinoffs if I'm not mistaken and besides that there's the veeeeeeeeeery rare loli illustration for H-magazines, Shirow is basically dead and when he's not dead he draws oily horsecocks with terrible CG.

And most importantly, Hagi actually learned to use computers for drawing AND learned to draw instead of being stuck in the same old style for 20-30 years, hell, he actually made considerable improvements, even Miura which is drawing mostly since the same days as Hagi didn't get nearly as good, he still makes very simple mistakes.

Say what you want about his 80's/early 90's style, but Hagi is pretty much one of the most skilled illustrators around despite his background, the ones from his time that still make good stuff are basically Nobuteru and Katsuya Terada.

Nagano's actually gotten a lot better as an artist, especially his character designs. And he's also somehow managed to escape the dreaded samface syndrome that plagues 90% of any artist in the anime industry. The Gothicmades are also extravagantly drawn with even more precision and consistency than the Mortar Headds. The only problem is that the GTM designs themselves are garbage.

Wrong. Eyes, jawline, nose size, and lips are all different. You can tell one is Asian and the other isn't. THIS is sameface, and as much as I love Urushihara, even he can't escape it.

Sorry to disappoint you but eye shadow makes a huge difference in how your eyes look, so you can't omit it. That's the entire point of makeup. Not to mention, the one with the eye shadow has slightly larger eyes.

Being at those angles doesn't make your chin more pointy than before.

Quit gettin' mad at cartoons you knuckleheads!
>>
>>14292662
Sameface is by definition, the ability to swap out someone's hair onto another person's head, and have them look no different than before because their faces are identical. Makeup applies to the face, so it does make a difference when it comes to sameface. Ignoring things like facial hair (i.e. eyelash or beard length), skin tone (blushing, etc), lipstick, and the like is the same as denying the very reason for makeup's existence- to make your face look different without reshaping it. Of course, most of these factors are not accounted for on a typical anime design, but they make a large difference when they're there. Carta is the most unique female character design in IBO solely because of her makeup.
>>
>>14292675
No, makeup does not offset sameface. By that logic, hair would offset sameface. It doesn't.
>>
>>14292685
Sameface applies to your face. When you apply makeup to your face, you are changing the appearance of your face. Your hair is not part of your face unless we're referring to facial hair. Hence the term "sameface".

If you swap a person's hair from someone with makeup to someone without makeup there is a noticeable difference.
>>
>>14292687
/fa/ here
You're hilariously wrong about hair. It can drastically change the appearance of someone's facial structure and the same can be said of cartoon people.
>>
>>14292690
>/fa/ here

So you've totally invalidated your own reputation before presenting your opinion. Good start.

>It can drastically change the appearance of someone's facial structure and the same can be said of cartoon people.

It can by covering parts of your face, so you are correct in that regard. But changing your hair doesn't change the size of your lips, your eyes, your cheek color, or any of that like makeup can. Makeup actually goes on the face and becomes a part of it. Hair does not.
>>
>>14292687
Hair applies to the face.

>>14292704
Oh, so now you're pulling a samefag argument and ad hominem? Sorry, but there's multiple people telling you that you're wrong. Maybe you should stop being so obstinate.
>>
>>14292704
>makeup actually goes on the face and becomes part of it
Only to the same degree hair does.
Just hiding the forehead or the cheekbones alters the face at least as much as lipstick and eyeshadow. And neither eyeshadow nor lipstick can change the size of one's lips or eyelashes or eyelids.

If you're dismissing hair, you have to dismiss makeup.
>>
>>14292705
>Hair applies to the face.

Read >>14292704

Hair doesn't apply to your face anywhere near the extent that makeup can. And let's say we go with your definition that hair does totally change your face- then that only further solidifies those Nagano characters NOT having sameface because their hair is totally different. So, why are you helping MY argument of all things?

>samefag argument

Nowhere was that mentioned, but feel free to demonstrate your illiteracy.

>ad hominem

People on /fa/ are mostly pretentious senseless morons when it comes to fashion. Same with /lit/ for writers, and -you guessed it- /m/ for mecha. So boldy stating that you're from /fa/ doesn't make you look smarter, it makes you look like a fucking retard who thinks /fa/'s opinion is actually worth a damn.

>Sorry, but there's multiple people telling you that you're wrong. Maybe you should stop being so obstinate.

Oh, I'm so terrified of you and the other one or two people who show off their idiocy and complete lack of both eyesight and knowledge. Please, show me your strength in numbers on this anonymous chinese discussion board where your identities don't mean jack shit.
>>
>>14292709
>Just hiding the forehead or the cheekbones alters the face at least as much as lipstick and eyeshadow.

I disagree with that statement, but there really is no way to disprove it since "at least as much" is relative to your tastes and not mine.

>neither eyeshadow nor lipstick can change the size of one's lips or eyelashes or eyelids.

Eyeshadow can give you more defined and larger eyes, and lipstick does the same for your lips.
>>
>>14292714
You're replying to the wrong guy.

And yeah, /fa/ knows more about fashion than you do. We know that hair is at least 30% of how you look.
>>
>>14292722
it's not relative to tastes, it's relative to using words right.
Lipstick doesn't enlarge shit. It makes lips look more or less large, same thing for eyeshadow. Hair makes the face look more or less narrow, more or less plump, etc.

If we're just talking about making faces look a certain way, rather than drawing them a certain way, you have to accept that different hair = different face. We both know it's wrong, but you don't realize that the same thing must be said of makeup.
>>
>>14292725
>And yeah, /fa/ knows more about fashion than you do.

Not from what you've demonstrated, sadly.

>We

You know it's only you, right? Unless you're suggesting that /fa/ is actually some kind of hivemind, and if it is, well, I guess they have to find a containment board for your kind somewhere.

>hair is at least 30% of how you look

So define "sameface" in your own words then, since you clearly don't agree with my definition. Since you insist that both hair and makeup define a face, what would it take for something to be "sameface"?
>>
>>14292731
>you have to accept that different hair = different face.

But there is far more to your face than its shape. The biggest difference between people of different races isn't their facial shapes, but their facial features. Eye size, nose size, lips size, skin tones. IRL almost everyone's facial shape is different, and hair doesn't really change that type of difference. It makes a difference ,but to suggest that it makes a bigger difference than makeup is ludicrous.
>>
>>14292736
it's really fucking simple: do the lines match when you superimpose the two faces?

If yes, then sameface. There's ways to diminish the appearance of sameface, such as diff hairstyles and makeups but ultimately it's down to the fucking linework and facial structure. And honestly I don't think sameface is a big problem as long as the characters are easily discernible and don't look like shit. It only means the artist is lazy or has extremely specific tastes.
>>
>>14292747
>IRL almost everyone's facial shape is different

Meant to say "similar" here, "different" was a typo

>>14292751

obviously.
There's like at least five main face types. And that's not getting into ethnic specificities.
And once again, you can't separate facial features and "head silhouette" when trying to describe sameface, it's all part of what's called the facial structure.

Or are you gonna tell me that a white guy in cheap blackface looks more like an african than your local lightskin nigga? Or that just squinting will actually make you more like an Asian than an eskimo normally would?

Your eyes and lips are all part of your facial structure. Both of those can be modified with makeup. I'd argue that makeup can also make a difference on your nose, but that's stretching it a bit. "Tracing a line" over a face and superimposing it on another face IS just a "head silhouette".

As someone who reads mostly 70's manga it's pretty weird looking at a list of work artists from the 80s on on wards have worked on. Like, a lot of them seem to have only one main work that seems like it'll never end.

Nagano has 2 official works, Guyver dude has a collection of one shots, Zeorymer, and, well, Guyver.

Also, the only Nagano characters that really suffer from sameface are the Fatima. Those are arguably intentional, though.

Back to Shirow: Just read Vol.2 of Appleseed. The chapters involving those Gunstand things was pretty confusing. Not sure I really understood it.

I generally agree. In terms of "new" Hagiwara, I'd say his body designs (breasts included) were at their best with the redone Arshes Nei in remade Vol. 2. Maybe a little too round, but aesthetically appealing with the rest of her body, particularly legs. The visible detail on her stomach absent in the original is appreciated.

It's pretty smart from a marketing standpoint. When you've got a series like Bastard which has been slowly serialized on and off over a few decades, it's really hard to keep a readerbase. Therefore, visually updating the beginning of the story to make it more digestible for a newer market is a good way to draw in new readers. Remember, he wouldn't have been able to do this if his publisher didn't think it was a good idea.
>>
>>14280716

Hey guys. I started reading the Black Magic manga, does this even have anything to do with the OVA? All i'm seeing so far is Venusian space furries and some environmentalist themes. I don't see how this ties in with the plot of M-66 at all.

I mean, it's not beyond criticism, but it's a good idea financially--and for people who like new Hagiwara (myself included* and haven't gotten new Bastard!! in decades (and are used to it), it's a chance to see new art. Bastard!! barely gets any other promo material, and very little fanart--this would mean more of both. With a remake, the original work isn't suddenly wiped from existence, you can have both on your shelf (or your hard drive).

Same for Kosuke Fuijishima--that first volume of O!MG is extremely rough.

*Which is the test--I'd buy that shit hard IF it was like the remake he did of Vol. 2, because I think that was possibly the pinnacle of his artwork, with its admitted problems. If it goes more into the whole "small heads, beachball boobs" area, I'd be a lot less inclined.

Buy the jap volumes, I don't think it got published anywhere else, we got some news here in Italy some time ago but afaik nobody actually published the few redrawn volumes, maybe they're waiting for Hagi to make a little more so they can get at least a year worth of press from those.
>>14293424
>So what do the old 80s mangaka do if they haven't died?
Most migrated in the illustration sector, videogames, anime concept art, fanbooks, you name it.

There's not many that actually live off royalties, even Rumiko makes something new once in a while, some of those are kind of a mistery, like Utatane as I said in my previous posts, sometimes they appear out of the blue for an anime or some illustrations for novels, but then they disappear for years again.

Also porn obviously.
>>14294372

>It's not even funny or sexy anymore, just... bad.

I disagree, mostly because the story never made sense after the first two volume to begin with and it was obvious Hagi just really wanted to draw cool and lewd stuff and was still in his metal period.
The biggest problem with Bastard!!'s plot aside from the glacial progression is that the story, while it is in there somewhere, is presented in an absolutely non linear way.

First we get the La Metallica arc with Abigail, then we get post La Metallica with a rescue arc and pieces of flashbacks with heavy implications about Darsh and what the world was years before La Metallica, then we get into a parallel world out of the blue, then we get back in La Metallica because dimension breaking happens in the fight with Uriel, THEN WE ARE IN HELL ALL OF A SUDDEN AND I DON'T KNOW WHETHER THIS IS A FLASHBACK OR NOT HOLY SHIT IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE IN THE TIMELINE.

Halfway through, Shirow decided that the killbot girls were way more interesting than his space wizard mary sue and focused two chapters on them, but then went back to space stuff, and made the appendix focus entirely on the M-66 and their potential for further stories.
It's a pretty nonsensical read as usual but it's interesting to see that he had a LOT of story ideas involving the marionettes. He considered making a sci-fantasy story about feudal lords using M-66 as soldiers and personal harems, and one about isolated groups of M-66 fighting each other in a hostile environment. And there's the chibi M-66 maid at the end of the appendix that's super cute too. All that stuff seems much more interesting than Black Magic Ghost Drive. But it's still nice to see that M-66 39's clothing draws inspiration from what was drawn in the appendix right there. I really like this outfit, very hip.

Another interesting tidbit of info is that an M-66's fuel tank is located in its pelvis. Meaning that F6-402's peace symbol engraved on her hip probably doubles as her fuel hatch, and this seems to match the artwork where we see her on her bed, where's there's a tube plugged in it.

And speaking of hips, they have a narrow inner pelvis chassis, like a male skeleton's, but they have stabilizers on the sides, which effectively gives them female hips. So that's cleared out.

Now, concerning M-77, I have a question: why the fuck does she have 4 arms AND a human face? I'm pretty sure that giving it a spider-like morphology would negate the psychological advantage of a human face.

Black Magic is actually a doujin compilation turned into a full story. I don't know if any of the chapters were published on their own before getting awkwardly rolled together, but the one Atlas story I came across seemed to feature the special forces team that fought the M66.
>>
>>14300365
huh, you managed to get your hands on some Atlas zines? Where?
>>
>>14296932
>Halfway through, Shirow decided that the killbot girls were way more interesting than his space wizard mary sue and focused two chapters on them

Well this got me back to reading it. That does sound much more interesting.

WHAT HAPPENED?!

All memes aside, she looks like a pretty cool character and I want to know more about her.
>>
>>14300386
yes but to be honest, the OVA is still more enjoyable, and F6-402 is cuter and more interesting than any of the marionettes in the manga.

Allegedly his real name is Masanori Ota. Maybe that can clue us in.

On the flipside, Viz hasn't done bupkis with Bastard again, even though the art is updated, so that limits the audience some.

So there's three kinds of Shirow gals:

-the bad girls: almost always very attractive with long fair hair, sometimes goofy as hell, always fun to bully

-the heroines: always short-haired and from a military or law-enforcement organization, tomboyish and athletic but pretty; takes herself seriously but spazzes out more or less frequently

-the bishoujos: petite, helpless and airheaded, sometimes nerdy, always have some kind of bob cut, look more noticeably Asian

knowing that, answer this poll:

>>14304531
Really? I never noticed. The scans are too shitty for these mangas that were pirated early on.

Not like she's got anything smart to say. It's always "muh sunlight". Truly a potted plant.

But yeah it does make for a few nice comedic moments where she gets tossed around by the Puma sisters.

Also, foreshadowing Shirow's love for BBC.
