Designs later on in the TV gundams just got more and more ridiculous in the Tomino era, like the wheel mechs in Victory. Did Japanese kids actually like those silly designs?

Once you see how versatile they are, they really do impress.
I remember when the first showed up, I was like "what the fuck, these things are silly", but then it rolled over a turret and I was like "these things are giant tires of death. I was blind, but now I see".
And it's not like they're ground only. They can become ufos of death. Combined with shielding and the fact they can use them as giant death yoyos in space... they're fucking awesome.
