And oh boy, YAS really did the most handsome Garma version of all, in the Origin manga.
That aside, I kinda like the "tragic idealistic prince" type of character and I can relate to a character wanting to prove his own merits in order to prove worthy of the familiy / position. Wish that some mecha show used this type of character as MC, it gives the protagonist a better goals, that could be descontructed as the story goes on and his ideals, what he believes and what he thinks of his familiy are shocked with the reality.

I want to see the alternate universe where Char didn't kill this guy, and he survives at least two-thirds of the original series as Char's trusted right-hand-man. There's just something about him I love.
I just watched that episode. I'm pretty surprised by the role of this Dawn Rebellion in the lead-up to the OYW. However dastardly Char was in First Gundam, he didn't commit the sin of starting the war, he didn't have the same blood on his hands which the Zabi family did. I was never sure that Char even wanted the war to happen in the first place, even if he believed in Spacenoid revolution. But with The Origin, if you argued hard enough, you could say that Char started the whole goddamn war, too. I can take Char sending innocent Char to his death, but this?

I don't think he did, really. He never did show any real tendncies of supporting the cause of spacenoid independence in the show, iirc, but was rather going along for the ride on his way to kill off the Zabis, at which point he found some truth to the Newtype theory through Lalah. At least not until after Zeta. And even then it was less of garnering a Spacenoid revolution and more "everyone come up to space".

This guy was genre blind as fuck, telling Char he knew he was an imposter. Did he seriously expect Char to not do something about that? I personally would have kept my discovery to myself and watched him closely. Ingratiated myself with him since he was obviously going places and would rise through the ranks quickly.

In Origin he goes full NEWTYPES ARE TEH FUTURE I WILL ONE DAY LEAD A NEWTYPE REBELLION after meeting Lala. He even tries to recruit Amuro.
It's kind of funny though, while he was confirmed to be a newtype at the end, at the point he was planning all this he hadn't really shown any confirmed newtype abilities and was just assuming that as Deikun's son he was naturally a newtype and the most fit to lead a newtype movement. Amuro even calls him out about this when Char tries to recruit him, saying that he feels nothing from Char the way he does with Lala, and directly asks if Char is even a newtype.

I liked that he at least said, "Oh, oops, you probably don't trust me yet, but I promise I'll keep it a secret", but I could totally see an anti-Zabi teenager getting swept up in the moment and gushing like that. It was painful to watch, knowing Char, knowing the genre, but a great sort of painful.

You actually make a good point. It'd make perfect sense for him to be genre blind. I just think that, assuming he has seen everything that Char has done in the academy, his intelligence, ability to strategize, etc. that he would know it would be risky making an enemy of Char. Hence revealing his knowledge of Char's deception would be a risky proposition. Something best done with tact and caution.
