No? It's not even really close. Space already has a shit load of debris cluttering it up. There's more than 150 million bits of debris in orbit that are larger than 1cm, with most of the really big bits being rocket and satellite debris. The Kessler Syndrome it mentions is real. It being a real, known phenomena is essentially the basis of the manga's story.
