Just announced, coming from Shout Factory.
>>
>>14259354
Damn, they must be selling well. Too bad they're only hitting shows that were already subbed. GoGoV is the first series they can get to that isn't subbed but then we have to worry about the quality of their subs.
>>
Here's hoping they learned their lesson from Kakuranger. No "Onii-chans" plz.

>>14259363
Kakuranger hit #1 on foreign films on Amazon when it came out. They're doing shockingly well.
>>
Fuck this. Their Kakuranger subs were shit. I'll pass. Glad I backed up MFC's Ohranger release
>>
>>14259363
>GoGoV is the first series they can get to that isn't subbed
Except that IS is finishing it off within next week or so.
>>
>>14259369
>>14259365
How bad are they?
>>
>>14259394
Not really that bad. 95% of the time it's fine, it's just weird shit like a kid saying "onii-chan", saying "gattai" instead of combination or fusion, sometimes not subtitling Jiraya's English. But outside of those small instances, it's watchable.
>>
>>14259394
Not very. Just people complaining about the odd use of "onii chan" and "gattai" once and again.

See, no one will actually complain about the quality of the translations cause they don't know shit, they just want something to complain about and pick the most minuscule thing they can.
>>
>>14259394
The biggest problem with them is the inconsistencies with them. They're constantly using different terms and switching between whether they want to leave a word translated or untranslated. It's incredibly frustrating as a viewer. And Brian Ward's response to this didn't exactly leave me all too pleased. So my money will not be spent on this, unless I hear good things after it's released.
>>
>>14259374
Really? I didn't even know someone was subbing it. That means Timeranger is the first one they can get to.
>>
>>14259432
That'll be in 2019. So, here's hoping OT finish it before then
>>
>>14259394
As far as I know, the actual translation isn't a problem. The inconsistency between terminology is crazy though. Is it Chou or Super? Onii-chan or bro? Gattai or fusion? They keep switching. It's like they forgot to hire an editor. The change to white subs is a step in the right direction, at least.
>>
>>14259454
It's been like that for all their releases. They obviously just don't care. And I won't be spending my money on it.
>>
>>14259394
nice, really it just comes down to "can you handle onii-chan" once every 38 episodes.
>>
>>14259394
>>14259411
>>14259412
First world problems?
>>
>>14259549

>subs for the first world are a first world problem
Who'd a thunk it
>>
At this rate

>2017: Carranger, Megaranger
>2018: Gingaman, GoGoV
>2019: Timeranger, Gaoranger
>>
>>14259574
as much as I would want a "3 a year" plan, I will accept this.
>>
Why are they bothering to sell this stuff? Didn't Ohranger bomb horribly?
>>
>>14259587
>Why are they bothering to sell this stuff?
To make a profit.

>Didn't Ohranger bomb horribly?
No.
>>
>>14259592
But there's no market for sentai in the US. Power Rangers dominates everything.
>>
>>14259605
You're allowed to believe whatever silly thing you want to, but if they weren't making a profit they wouldn't continue releasing more series.
>>
>>14259605
>But there's no market for sentai in the US. Power Rangers dominates everything.

>>14259365
>Kakuranger hit #1 on foreign films on Amazon when it came out. They're doing shockingly well.
>>
Shout Factor has alot of foreign products under their belt, so as long as Sentai sells within the projected range, they will continue to sell.
>>
I cant wait for them to get to the really good ones like Timeranger.

Still waiting on them to get the rights to Rider and/or Metal Hero. Officially subbed Gavan or even B-Fighter would rock my socks
>>
They better get their shit worked out before Carranger, because it's one of my all time favs.
>>
>>14259651
>Metal Hero
On that note, the VR Troopers sets having bombed may hurt Metalder and Spielban's chances (as if the former lacking a figuarts wasn't bad enough).
>>
>>14259651
>Officially subbed Gavan or even B-Fighter would rock my socks

in France we have Gavan and Sharivan but no Shaider because VR Troopers
>>
>>14259657
They won't. And because it's a comedy season, it'll probably get butchered pretty hard.
>>
>>14259605
Internet only thing. It completely cuts out the middle man.
>>
>>14259587
Only in TV ratings. Toy sales are still the highest in Sentai history.
>>
>>14259796
>yfw due to it being a comedy season they give it Engrish subtitles that you'd expect from a bad kung-fu movie
>>
>>14259454
>hating yellow subs

FUCK OFF OBERSTEIN
>>
>>14259651
>Officially subbed Gavan
Why? Why do you want this?
>>
>>14259651
>Officially subbed Gavan or even B-Fighter would rock my socks

Why? You get better quality, more from the series, and sooner from fansubs.

At this point it just seems like these Power Rangers branded DVDs get in the way. It removes the fansub series from the internet and we don't get any of the movies, and the translations are lower quality. So in the end, what's the benefit??
>>
>>14260224
>removes the fansub series from the internet
It's the internet. Nothing ever goes away.
>>
>>14259412
>>14259549
>noooo, you're not allowed to complain about bad things!
Sorry for the criticism, Big Brother.
>>
I want to see they do Kamen Rider Black & RX due to shitty Saban adaptation
>>
>>14259411
jiraiya's english is very understandable though, it's fine.
at least for english speakers, anyway

the curse of valvrave and many other pics seemed to be gone beyond restoration, things can get off the net if nobody saves them
>>

>weeb bitch about it
>>
>>14261532
Why should we care for sub par products? And if it was weebs, there'd be less bitching.
>>
>>14261627
Not him, but the complaints thus far seem quite minor, especially in comparison to past complaints about Shout Factory's DVDs.
>>
>>14261692
>minor
Maybe to you, but these sets aren't exactly cheap. So, if it bothers others why should they bother getting it?
>>
>>14261532
>weeb
You're a fucking retard. If we were weeaboos then we'd be happy that Shout is using "Gattai" and "onii-chan" in their subs. Any sane viewer of Japanese materials despises when companies do this shit.

>>14261692
Kaku is easily the worse of all the sets sub wise. Not only do they go full retard with "onii-chan" but it switches to "big brother", or the character's name every few episodes. Same with gattai. There's no consistency, and the sub read like a set of slightly competent HKs.
>>
>>14261742
I'm not saying they should bother getting it if they don't want it, even if I personally think the "onii-chan" thing is not that big of a deal.

Also, I don't think the $49.99 price is that bad considering you're getting the whole series. There's also stores on Amazon selling it for even less.
>>
>>14261852
>the "onii-chan" thing
If you think that's merely the problem, then you obviously don't care to understand the issues people are having with Shout's set.
>>
>>14260493
sure it's criticism, but it is hardly anything to get your panties in a twist.
>>
>>14260224
the movie fansubs are still around.
>>
>>14261742
>aren't cheap
>$40
>as opposed to $80+ per dvd volume (about 10?)

there is a reason why japanese people important western releases of anime and shit

>in comparison to past complaints about Shout Factory's DVDs.
There have never been more complaints about Shout then now, though.
The worst Zyuranger and Dairanger had was yellow fonts and occassional inconsistency between katakana spellings (like Mei's tribe's name). Now we're getting normal words differently between episodes, including stuff like stock sequences terminology. Pic related illustrates it best.
Why should I pay any price when the unofficial version has more attention and thought put into it?
>>
>>14261882
>There have never been more complaints about Shout then now, though
never seen their tranformers subs?
>>
>>14261882
You must have missed when some folks were sent incorrectly timed Ultraseven DVDs.
>>
>>14261885
I take it I should avoid them, apparently. I should've clarified "for toku fans".

>>14261895
I'll avoid those as well. More fuel for the fire. Christ. Have these people put out ANY decent quality releases?
>>
>>14261899
In all fairness to them, that was a problem that was actually fixed.
>>
I can understand, but I guess it doesn't really bother me.

I grew up with early 2000-mid 2000 of anime fansubing where all of this shit was kind of common.

granted I guess I have it in my mind so long as it isn't this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUYlqLlbix0

it doesn't both me.
>>
>>14261899
>Have these people put out ANY decent quality releases?

The MST3K vs Gamera tin set was really nice.
>>
>>14261904
We only have wonderful groups like MFC O-T, etc. to blame. They've spoiled us with their releases.
>>
Onii-chan is better than what most subs I see do and localize it
>>
>>14261930
I can see this, it makes sense when an actual little sibling using it, I could see them using "brother..." but for a complete stranger it doesn't work. especially if they just use the character's name in it's place it's like "when the fuck he tell you his name?"
>>
>>14261935
In the context of a kid talking to a complete stranger I think I'd use "Mister" or something along those lines.
>>
>>14261953
but wouldn't that be more of ojii
>>
>>14261953
Awful
>>
>>14261956
Probably, but it's the only thing I could think of that wasn't just "Bro."

>>14261961
How rude.
>>
>>14261961
Why? If you're "forced" to leave a word untranslated, you've already failed as a translator.
>>
>>14261978
The translation of oniichan is brother, bro. Something like that. Mister is something completely different. It's awful, but not an aborton the way it is to translate [japshit] as [character name]. That's the real failure
>>
>>14261980
When was the last time a child on the street called you "bro"?
>>
>>14261996
Children on the street don't typically approach people they don't know unless they're very young children and don't know any better.
>>
>>14261895
The subs were fine, timing was the issue. In the case of Ultraman that comes from cramming 39 episodes onto two DVD discs. Ultra Seven fared a lot better on six discs.
>>
Since they're getting so much flak and they're releasing shows that have already been fansubbed, why don't they just pay MFC and GUIS to "translate" the shows and just use their existing scripts and timing? OR failing that just hire a fucking editor to prevent stuff like this>>14261882
>>
>>14262154
I was under the impression that their general attitude towards fansubs and fansubbers is to pretend they don't exist.
>>
>>14262154
Sorry to bring up /v/ talk, but it's the same reason Nintendo doesn't use the fan translation or Mother 3.
>>
>>14261996
I've never lived in Japan and I'm frightened of children so never
>>
>>14263032
The point is that if one leaves something like that untranslated, they're going to have to translation notes, which unless they release a booklet with the set, are extremely obtrusive. You can't assume everyone knows what these words mean. Every show is someone's first.
Your right that "onii-san" doesn't mean "mister", but no child says things like that in english. Contextually, "mister" or a similar word would be correct.
>>
>>14261742
40-50 bucks is cheap for an entire show
>>
>>14263330
And it rarely goes for that anyway.
>>
>>14261882
>Why should I pay any price when the unofficial version has more attention and thought put into it?
Because the fansubbers do not actually produce the show.

Your reasonable assessment falls on deaf ears in this place. Anything less than oni-san no tachi is akin to censorship or cultural whitewashing

Got a Mega link for the MFC Ohranger release, out of curiosity?
>>
>>14263500
And neither does Shout Factory.
>>
Anyone got a Mega link for MFC's Ohranger encodes?
>>
>>14263198
This 100x
>>
>>14263198
Honestly, I think that kind of shit only gets REAL bad when they try to delve a bit deeper into Japanese culture than just how people refer to each other.

Which reminds me. How did Shout Factory handle the names of the monsters?
