Like many artists before him, he has just burn out on Evangelion. Understandable to all (minus the Eva fags) since Eva has being going on for more than 2 decades in one form or another. The third rebuild film showed just how creatively bankrupt he was on this franchise. And it is the main reason he went on to do other projects. Projects that he is interested in. I doubt he will ever again touch Evangelion. If a fourth and final film comes out it will be -either a quick finale just to say I'm done with it. Otakus deal with it and leave me the fuck alone. Or he will give the directorial chair to someone else. He's not going to invest himself in Eva ever again. Anno is a different man, he's a different artist with different priorities. Eva is the past. Let the franchise rest in peace.

Exactly. This is the definitive answer, especially for someone in their late 50s. It's the same situation as Tomino with Victory Gundam, Nagano with the Gothicmade retcon, Shirow with his horsecocks, Kojima with MGSV, and plenty of other artists, writers, directors, etc. If you spend your whole life working on something chances are you'll be bored to shit with it and have to make some kind of massive retarded change to make it different enough to get yourself interested in it again, or just end it on such a shit note so you can forget about it and move on.
