It is not a bad place to start as the mecha porn is all over the place, and that it is one of the newer Sunrise studio 1 productions that uses modern tech while still maintain an animation feel. But you are not going to fully enjpy / comprehend the plot without knowledge to UC shows prior (timeline wise), and there are a few homages and and fan services that pander specifically to Zeon fans, such as the Remnants raiding Torrington with "museum" suits. It is an entertaining show by itself, but you will have to come back to it after you have full grasp of the UC lore to fully appreciate it.

Every Gundam is somebody's first. Though, I'd recomend watching it later after you've seen other U.C. stuff (79, Zeta, ZZ, CCA) up to that point, ESPECIALLY ZZ. You'll get more out of Unicorn that way.
It's a mistake if you are turned off by an overwhelming sense of self importance, held by a series that has no actual effect on it's timeline.
