What do you see in this that reminds you of 80's sentai? 80's were probably the age of the darkest sentai so far (Liveman, Maskman, Changeman, Bioman and so on) and Zyuoh doesn't feel like that at all.
This episode's ending... was unusually somber, at least for a kid's show.
I think this episode and that one Leo episode about the guitarist ended on fairly somber notes, which is strange considering how optimistic Sentai normally is. I like it, but it's just weird.

Doesn't matter. Guy still decided that material possessions were more important than his sister, as the monster's plot wasn't gonna hurt anybody, just take material wealth from those who didn't really need it. Hell, the museum probably had those rocks insured, if they even were the real ones, since the displays are often copies of the originals.
Then he decided that the right thing to do was return the bank's insured money back. Leaving his sister to waste in the hospital and die. There were other ways to achieve a more positive ending while remaining honest, hell, just not having the cash land in front of him would have been a lot less blergh.
