I feel that he, more than any other Gundam protagonist, exists for the sake of moving the plot forward. It's not that he's particularly bad, he just seems like a guy who's there to pilot the Unicorn and react to things. Mika and Kou, for all their faults, at least seemed to have a semblance of a life outside of the gundam.
