Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea, First Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army, went round the exhibition of machinery and equipment manufactured as labour gifts of loyalty to be presented to the Congress of the motherly Party.
He saw a new-type 80 hp tractor made at the Kumsong Tractor Factory.
He said with great satisfaction it is a great success that the factory manufactured the new-type tractor with great capacity whose all aspects of technical performance are on the world’s level by its own efforts and with indigenous technology.
After making the rounds of various types of farm machines newly manufactured at the farm machine field, he said they have been made well to suit the natural and topographical features of the country and the physical constitution of Koreans.
Seeing with a bright smile on his face the new-type tractor, bus, lorry and other machine products made by our own efforts and with indigenous technology and raw materials, he said repeatedly with satisfaction that they looked very nice and great. He noted that the exhibition was of eventual significance in instilling conviction and optimism into all the service personnel and people all out in the general charge for building a thriving nation, holding high the slogan of giving priority to self-development.
Noting that the machine products on display at the exhibition proved once again that self-development is the best and self-reliance and self-development are the way for us to live, he said we should root out the proclivity to import without fail and put a definite end to it.
He gave thanks to the units for having successfully made various machine products by giving full play to the self-development-first principle in the name of the Seventh Congress of the WPK and gave an instruction to start their serial production as soon as possible.
We should in the future, too, strengthen our own force by our own efforts and with indigenous technology and resources and uphold the self-development-first principle, the revolutionary spirit of hewing out our way, he noted, adding: Only our own strength is what we can believe in.
He expressed expectation and belief that all the service personnel and people would make eye-opening achievements one after another in implementing the line and policies set forth at the Seventh Congress of the WPK in hearty response to the self-development-first principle.

The newly-created drama “Blood Vessel” is on stage at the National Theatre in Pyongyang.
The drama deals with the struggle of the workers of the Sangwon Cement Complex for devotedly fulfilling the increased production assignments allocated by supreme leader Kim Jong Un.

The Ongjin Giant Cedar is growing in Ongjin County, South Hwanghae Province. It is an evergreen needle-leaf tall tree belonging to the cedar family. The tree grows 100 metres high and 10 metres across at the height of chest. It lives for almost 3,000 years. The giant cedar is an androgynous plant. The tree grows slowly for 15 years and afterwards, faster. The tree is used as timber and tannin stock and some are planted for afforestation.
The giant cedar emerged on the earth in the Cretaceous and widely spread in the northern hemisphere and most of it became extinct owing to climatic changes and now the tree remains in some parts of North America. The extinct giant cedar became the source of coal and wood coal in a geologic formation. The Ongjin Giant Cedar was imported into Korea in Juche 48 or 1959. The temperature of the zone where the tree is growing is 12.6 degrees centigrade and the precipitation is 1,050 millimeters on an annual average.
The Ongjin Giant Cedar is about 29.7 metres tall and about 1.2 metres round at the height of chest and its crown is about 4.2 metres. The Ongjin Giant Cedar is of great significance in the experimental study for cultivating in the conditions of Korea the giant cedar, a rare tree which is found in the extremely limited regions of the world.
The scenic spot lies along the 40-km-long seashore.
Sheer cliffs and singular islets, fantastic rock washed and worn by the sea, waves dashing against the crags and sea spray in Outer Chilbo are far superior to those of Sea Kumgang in Mt Kumgang.
Sea Chilbo is subdivided into the Solsom, Tapgojin and Musudan districts, among which the Musudan district is the most striking for its picturesque landscape. Sea Chilbo seen from the sea is more spectacular.

Chairman: Nowadays the green sectors have spread not only to the development of the economy, including industry and agriculture, but to social activities (education and technology).
For example, green architecture aims at saving resources and energy, environment protection, use of natural light, health-friendly air conditioning, recycling of energy and resources, green building materials, intellect regulation, greening ecology and comfortable environment.
Nowadays the worldwide greening work is achieving rapid progress according to the common interests and demands of humankind. To see the energy production in the world, the production capacity of renewable energy has doubled in comparison with a few previous years and new facilities for renewable energy increased by dozens of per cent.
The branches of green industry like wind, solar and geothermal energies are increasing day after day in the DPRK.
Reporter: Please tell me your association’s work to green the region.
Chairman: True to the policy of the government of the DPRK to reduce the emission of global warming gas and prevent environment pollution, the association has achieved many successes in the production of renewable energies, like hydraulic power, wind power, biogas and solar and geothermal energies. While directing its efforts to covering many areas including Kangnyong with flowers and trees including fruit trees, it has ensured that tens of thousands of tree of superior species like pine, Korean pine, walnut and chestnut trees are planted and tens of hectares of tree nurseries and medicinal herb beds are created.
The association is directing its primary efforts to turning Kangnyong County, South Hwanghae Province, into a model green district, and is trying to expand its scope gradually.
It plans to develop the Kangnyong county town, which has soil for growing various kinds of agricultural crops and conditions for seawater and fresh water fish farming, into an industrial development zone with the main stress on the research and development of green industrial technology and processing of organic agricultural produce and by-products. In this way, it will create a model green industry and, by building on the successes and experiences thus gained, turn the county into an international green base.
As the county is near the Port of Haeju, it has good conditions for marine transport, and it is connected with Pyongyang, Haeju and Nampho by railways and roads.
The area where shallow-sea farming is possible in the county is about thousands of hectares; it has abundant marine resources like trepang, abalone, shellfish, tangle, laver, blue crab and flatfish, and good marine and ecological conditions for farming them. With dozens of reservoirs, large and small, it has conditions for fresh water fish farming.
In addition, it has good conditions for developing tidal energy, biogas and other forms of natural energy. And as it has favourable conditions for farming, including sweet potato farming, it can be fully developed into an experimental base of food production cycle of farming and stockbreeding, a production and processing base of organic agricultural produce, and a service base.
Scores of blocks of dwelling houses and public establishments have been built in Kumjong-ri, and construction of green structures using renewable energy like solar and geothermal energies and biogas is under way.
While giving priority to greening agriculture, fisheries, energy and forestry in conformity to the natural and geological features of the county, the association plans to develop greening other sectors.

Kim Yong Dok, the centenarian, was born a tenant farmer’s third daughter in Taedong-ri, Hwangju County on December 18, 1915. She underwent bitter sorrow of deprivation of the country eking out a hard life of contempt and persecution as nursemaid. She got married and had her children but her face was always gloomy because of poverty and hunger. Although she suffered from postpartum diseases and backache, she could not afford to see a doctor. She toiled and moiled in the field from dawn till night. Exhausted as she was, she had to do washing and needlework for pay at night. This was how she could feed her five children.

The liberation of the country (August 15, 1945) brought happiness to her home—her children became able to go to school and she and her husband, like other people, became legitimate masters of the land as well as the country thanks to the agrarian reform law. She worked assiduously in the field. When she was asked to take care of herself, she said she had never been to hospital before liberation because of lack of money and that tilling her own land given by the government now she felt well as if all her old illnesses had gone off. Thanks to state policies she went to renowned sanatoria for treatment of postpartum diseases and backache. Every condition was provided to help her get treatment without any worry.
Hoping to repay the care shown to her, Kim didn’t stop working even after she had retired. She prepared aid materials for workers at major construction projects.
One day not long after her retirement she was unexpectedly visited by some doctors at her home. They said they were there because she had not appeared for regular health checkup. When the old woman said they made a visit in vain as she was healthy, a doctor remarked, “The elderly should have regular health checkup according to the Public Health Law. You have to obey the law.” At the words, Kim thought of her five siblings who had died miserably in the deplorable world when the country was under the military occupation of the Japanese imperialists.
As she got older, it became a routine to receive her doctor in charge who brought tonics, dong officials her subsidy, and service workers of the district living necessaries. In December last year she celebrated her 100th birthday amidst congratulations of so many people. She received a birthday spread from the state.
On arriving at home, we found Kim at needlework without the aid of glasses. She said, “Reporting about me is not bad, but I would like to ask you to write about our world where living a hundred years is celebrated as a national event. This is where I live in.”
Yew on Mt Oga is an evergreen needle-leaf tree belonging to Taxaceae. It is growing on the Kasan Pass in Mt Oga standing in northwest Korea. The mountain is 940 metres above the sea level. The tree is one of the tallest and oldest yews in Korea. The more than 1 100-year-old tree is about 16 metres high. The lower part is 3.7 metres round and the crown is 7 metres across. It is called red yew as its stem and wood are red. The shape is oval.
Branches are almost horizontal and those in the lower part a little downward and those in the upper part upward. The leaves are cauliform and the front side is deep green and the back is yellowish green.
The tree bears red berries, usually once in two years. The Yew on Mt Oga has been designated as Living Monument No. 103 as it is a precious tree of the country which confirms the history of nature of Mt Oga. It still remains verdant thanks to the policy of the government of the Democratic People´s Republic of Korea on protecting natural monuments.
5 000-ton trade cargo ship Jaryok (self-reliance) was built as a present to the Seventh Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea.
The ship was launched with due ceremony at the Ryongnam Dockyard on May 15.
Present at the ceremony were O Su Yong, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the WPK, officials concerned, officials and employees of the dockyard.
Kang Jong Gwan, minister of Land and Maritime Transport, made an address for the launch to be followed by some speeches.
They said the present success is ascribable to the patriotic devotion of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il to the development of maritime trade and to the leadership of Marshal Kim Jong Un and it is also a proof of the loyalty of the working people and officials in the maritime transport field to the party who are determined to bring in earlier the final victory of building a thriving socialist country.
They referred to the fact that Kim Jong Un personally named the cargo ship Jaryok.

As long as the hostile acts and threat of aggression against the DPRK persist along with the nuclear blackmail, and imperialism, the root cause of injustice and evils, remains in the world, the DPRK will further sharpen its treasured nuclear sword of justice and defend both sovereignty and justice with nukes and usher in a fresh era of national reunification and prosperity by dint of its might.
Secondly, the US and the puppet group should not dream of the so-called effect of "sanctions" and "blockade" against the DPRK today when the Korean style economic power is on the horizon to enable all the people to enjoy the happiest life under the uplifted banner of the self-development-first principle.
The stereo-typed trumpeting about "sanctions" and "blockade" against the DPRK will never work on it today when it is achieving the economic development of the country and improvement of the people's living on the invincible self-development-first principle, pursuant to the Juche-oriented line of simultaneously developing the two fronts, not by any help of other.
The US and the puppet group's harsh "sanctions" against the DPRK will only turn out to be a noose tightening their necks by themselves and they will keenly feel how long they have resorted to the foolish and mean acts, watching the majestic appearance of the economic power on this land and hearing the happy laughter.
Thirdly, the US and its followers should clearly understand that the longer they pursue the confrontation with the DPRK, the bitterer disgrace and shame they will suffer as the loser and the more legendary tales about steady victories Songun Korea will convey to posterity.
Now is the time for the US and its followers to cool their heads heated by war hysteria and take a fresh option for their own benefits as they have been hell-bent on the moves to realize their unattainable goal of invading the DPRK.
The US should make a bold decision to roll back its hostile policy toward the DPRK, the root cause of tension on the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding areas, and stop the war exercises against it, far from persistently taking issue with its nuclear weapons which do not pose any threat to anyone.

With the approach of the 7th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea, 270-odd industrial establishments in Pyongyang fulfilled their production quotas for the 70-day campaign and the first half of the year ahead of schedule.
Silk reelers of the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Silk Mill over-fulfilled their daily quotas 200 to 250 percent.
The Pyongyang Electric Cable Factory 326 carried out its production plans of insulated wire and electric rode for the first half of this year, while the Aeguk Knitwear Factory improved the quality of products and boosted production.
The same is true of the Pyongyang Coal-mining Machine Factory, Pyongyang Cosmetics Factory, Ryuwon Shoes Factory, Taedonggang Battery Factory, etc.
Meanwhile, the targets for the 70-day campaign were also hit by the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Textile Mill, Pyongyang Children's Knitted Goods Factory, Pyongyang Wheat Flour Processing Factory, Pyongyang Bearing Factory and others.
These achievements clearly show that the final victory is in store for the DPRK people who are advancing under the self-development-first banner.
A project for Chongchongang-Phyongnam gravity-fed irrigation waterway is now progressing apace in the DPRK.
In 40 days alone, its builders removed 200 000 cubic metres of earth and excavated 17 000 cubic metres of bedrock for waterway tunneling. And they filled earth of 50 000 cubic metres to lay a cofferdam for the construction of intake dam.
This project is one of the undertakings under the Workers' Party of Korea's plan for nature remaking.
Mindulle Notebook Factory
This newly-built factory is a modern notebook producer for children and students across the country—from kindergarteners to university students.
The factory has a five-storey production building, which covers a building space of 1 500 square meters and a total floor space of 7 600 square meters. It has printing, binding, cutting and several other workshops and workteams.
All production processes including high-speed perfecting and flexible disk presses, mixed folding and multispindle-wire binding machines, hydraulic display cutters, semi-automatic staplers, pasting and three-way cutting machines are automated and streamlined. Materials supply, collection of production results, labour and power management and other production processes and business activities are controlled under an integral system.
The factory turns out dozens of kinds of notebooks. Covers are designed to suit the different ages and mentalities of students and subjects. The present annual production capacity is 50 million volumes and is expected to increase to 150 million in the future.
The factory now puts main emphasis on upgrading of IT basis in its business management, and enhancement of the proportion of locally-available raw and other materials.
The Central Mining Research Institute under the State Academy of Sciences in the DPRK developed a new method of mass-producing high-purity tourmaline.
Tourmaline is drawing attention as one of materials favourable for environmental and health improvement, as it emits far infrared rays and anion and contains microelements.

Going round various parts of the museum, he learned in detail about its construction.
Noting that the construction of the Nature Museum as a mass education and sci-tech diffusion centre for giving knowledge about nature provided another peculiar education and leisure complex to the people, youth, students and children, he highly praised the relevant sector and builders for successfully building the museum.
He gave an instruction to better arrange the museum on the principle of scientific accuracy, practicality and kind service.
Feasting his eyes on the Central Zoo, he said it looks spectacular, indeed. Noting that from the moment visitors enter its huge main building depicting a tiger in Mt Paektu, they would feel greatly delighted and excited.

Not only the exterior but also the interior of the animal sheds has been designed and constructed on the basis of such visual effect and good formative art that any visitor can easily know what animal sheds they are even from a distance, he said, adding that they stand so impeccable that everyone may feel as if he had come to the habitats of the animals.
If the Central Zoo is open, the people will feel happier and immensely pleased and they will be proud of standing on the high level of the world's civilization, he said, adding it is worthy of remodelling the zoo with much effort.
