Two onscreen shots for each visible weapon for battle participant currently on screen is ideal. A battle participant firing multiple rapid beams from a single type of weapon (like a machinegun or multiple mounted laser cannons like an X-wing) is good, mixing multiple types of beams (Freedom beamspam) is not.

WW2 plane like the Spitfire originally had around 12 guns because some of them broke and you needed that much to cripple those plane.
Then came bigger gun... which never replaced those entirely.
Why ? Because the smaller caliber allowed to track your shots and avoid wasting the more precious bigger one, it also stressed the enemy.
But nowadays all our weapons have much greater accuracy and most are one-hit-kill. So you mostly want to shoot first with the right power, not spam a lot of over/underpowered bullet.
Tank Gun are designed to match enemy armor and kill in one hit.
Plane Gun are designed to pour the smallest caliber needed into a trail maximizing hit chance.

WW1 and 2 planes were made of fabric stretched over a frame, so machine gun bullets pretty much went straight through the target unless you A) poured a metric fuckton of bullets into them or B) hit something vital. Cannons like on the Bf-109 were superior to banked machineguns because they could cause significant damage no matter where they hit the enemy.
Modern fighter cannon are designed to put out as many shells as possible in the shortest period of time to make the most of the literally split second gun engagement opportunities you'll have at jet fighter speeds.
As for lasers, you can NEVER have enough lasers.

The BF-109 was an all metal construction like most of the air superiority fighters in WW2, by then fabric stretched over frame was only used for shit like the hurricane that was supposed to go after the bombers rather than dogfight with the bomber's escorts and could afford the reduction in speed a fabric construction forced.

Their range and power is directly linked to the energy poured into them (and lens size, if used)
